Conversation with a Bush supporter friend last night
Really it stunned me. She lives in Alabama. Hates Clinton and everything Clinton. She loves George Bush. Long ago we decided not to discuss politics cause I made it known she wouldn't like the truth and wouldn't believe the truth and that time will tell.
Anyways...she was talking about her love of Bush last night (another friend said she was just trying to make me angry--it worked, we aren't speaking), and I said her love of Bush ought to show up everytime she fills up her gas tank--that she is paying for her love.
Her response:
She loved Bush even more because her husband works offshore and EVERYTIME the gas prices go up, her husband gets $100 raise (he is the captain of a boat that carries the oil company personnel to and from shore).
Unreal...but I guess this is the sentiment of the country. I have mine...so fuck you.

3. Same difference
They are in essence getting a REAL cost-of-living increase with those types of raises. They won't see the difference because their income is adjusted so that they won't.

2. Another selfish republican, I find it interesting
that the divide between the parties just gets bigger everyday. How can one relate to them anymore? They are almost inhuman now.

6. Just wait
Till Bush hands America over to WTO. Not only will she need a prescribtion for herbs and vitamins, but we can't even control our own economy. Dang, libertarianism (a modified form) seems better each day. Can someone be liberal and libertarian?

14. Sure can.
First, both terms come from the same term.

In simple terms. Libertarians don't want to be told what to do. Liberals help others. No incompatibility there.

BTW, I have Noam Chomsky describe himself as a libertarian socialist. I sometimes cop to that.

15. Libertarian socialist?
Sounds like captialistic communist.

At least there are options. I'd prefer more political philosophies to be around to counter neoconservatism and neoliberalism. An edited book could help even if small numbers are sold. DU could ask people to write papers and publish it through CafePress.

17. Exerpts from dictionary:
libertarian:
1 : an advocate of the doctrine of free will
2 a : a person who upholds the principles of absolute and unrestricted liberty especially of thought and action b capitalized : a member of a political party advocating libertarian principles

liberal:
5 : BROAD-MINDED; especially : not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms. (The other definitions did not apply to politics.)

Where's the conflict?

18. "Where's the conflict?"
There is no conflict. (Think of Vader's voice)

Just what is in my head. Libertarians I met gave me stereotypes. Still trying to sort out exactly what they want. Libertarian Party site is helping some I guess.

22. Oh don't go by THOSE libertarians.
Many of the libertarians in the Libertarian party have the same relationship to libertarianism that modern Republicans do to the party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.

Many contemporary libertarians are just free marketeers and corporatists who are against taxes and government regulation of business. Sometimes they are referred to as "Republicans who smoke dope."

This is the case of corporate co-optation of a good principle if applied to individuals.

21. Liberal and libertarian aren't opposites...
http://politicalcompass.org/

Try the FAQ section, especially question #13. Lots of good info.

In short, the opposite of libertarian is authoritarian, while left and right-wing are opposites. Political compass uses these two scales as two axes on a graph. :)

Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 06:02 PM by eissa
Incredibly selfish, no social conscience whatsoever. And they will back up this president to the death; at this point I honestly believe that * could be caught in the oval office with a little boy and the rw will either (1) justify it, or (2) say the boy had it coming.

9. I don't get it
Boat captains make a good living - thanks to the ILA and the guaranteed wage.

I'm not rich but I make a very good living. I don't mind paying taxes for a better world. These people who are upper middle class or better and gouge and scrounge for every penny are really pigs. I see it every day and I still can't square it.

But the term "selfish cunt" leaps to mind. How can someone actually talk that shit? Doesn't that moron realize that everytime gas goes up, she pays more for food, for groceries, for all plastic goods, for EVERYTHING in her life? What a dumb fuck. I'd just send her a big FUCK YOU, YOU GREEDY UNAMERICAN BITCH note and cut her out of your life for good.

16. We really have just disassociated ourlseves from all repukes
but Mr. kt's parents. And even they are on a limited relationship They sent one too many hate emails to us. We never responded, we just let them vent, let them be the bad guys, and now, I refuse to speak to them at all. Seriously, once every 6 months when we have to be in the same room, I just sit there and basically, completly ignore them. It's great because they don't know what to do!

This "person" is no friend. "it" is a terrible influence and needs to go away... like a tumor.
