The White House just called (seriously)
by John in DC - 7/28/2005 05:05:00 PM

David Almacy just called me from the White House communications office to clarify the reports that Bush flipped off reporters yesterday while visiting the Hill. David says that Bush was definitely giving the thumbs up sign with regards to the upcoming CAFTA vote (Central American Free Trade Agreement). I asked David if I could write about our conversation, and he said please do.

I have to say, I'm not real convinced by the thumbs up excuse. It's possible, of course, but the video doesn't look like his thumb, and Bush has a history of flipping off reporters (there's a video we posted last fall of him flipping off a reporter in Texas while governor).

4. A thumbs up without using a thumb. Strange.
I usually use my thumb for a thumbs up instead of my middle finger. Do they do it different in Texas? Funny, I was told by a friend that if I gave that kind of thumbs up in Texas. I was likely to get shot. Doesn't sound very friendly in response to such an encouraging hand signal.

Most of us know a "finger of hostility" when we see one.

7. I believe their story
I agree it doesn't look like it in the video, but there's probably a simple explanation, like the last time he fell off his bike he severed his fingers and they reattached them in the wrong order.

That could happen to anyone.

63. I say it is NOT a thumb.
As an artist who understands shadows - I say the shadows of the hand would not look the way they do with a thumbs up motion.

I "could" have believed a pen - because of the shadows - but not a thumb - no way.

Not a thumb -- not a pen -- that is the middle finger -- also know as -- giving THE finger.

46. That looks exactly like he's giving a thumbs-up.
Do it yourself, pointing away from you. Look- your fingers' knuckles stick out on the left. The hand in the picture is too small to be the looking at the back of it. You're looking at the thumb and the fleshy part in between the carpals on the right.

That's his freaking thumb. Let's not pursue this and look dumb.

Try holding your hand straight up and give the thumbs up and see if you can get your thumb where Bush's is. If you can do it please take a pic and post it.

I don't believe this is more than comic fodder anyway but to deny it seems kinda dumb. I did what you said and I can't get my thumb to stick out anywhere but on the side when my hand is in that position...

on edit.. Ok after looking at the video again, frame by frame, I can see places where it looks like it could be a thumb, but, there is a spot where the hand is turned wrist facing the camera where you can see it's the bird. Now let the comics take over and let's get back to Valerie Plame.

47. Yeah, and it's not a PEN either
He is flipping the bird and they can spin all they want to - that is no THUMB. In fact, though, for a middle finger, it's rather short, which makes it even more believable.

Is that Dick next to him? The two of them seem to get into trouble when they're together.

60. Yes, I've been looking at it. Do you see how small the wrist is?
That's not the wrist's back-view. That's the side view. Men don't have wrists that look that small from the back. You can also see the fleshy part of the lower thumb sticking out on the left side, and then the knuckles on the rest of his fingers sticking to the left of the fleshy part. Then you can see his index knuckle on the upper right, and the flesh that raises up when you give the thumbs up right below that knuckle.

It's his thumb.
