My own image analysis... it's a finger, no doubt.
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 09:52 PM by Rosco T.
Ok, first let's crop down to just the 'digit' in question.

now, we'll enlarge 200% and apply a straight 'photo enhancement' to give a little color balance and correct the shadows.

ok, now we apply some 'edge enhancement' to bring out the details a bit...

and finally, apply a 'vertical edge finder' to bring out the shapes...

if that's a 'thumb' then the width of the hand would be about 1/3 the size we see (take your right hand, make a 'thumbs up' and see how much of you hand is on each size...

finally, using a 'horizontal edge finder' we look again..

again, make a thumbs us and look at your hand, you have your fingers curled over and you SHOULD be able to see the edges of them here...

it's a finger...

1. well at least we're focused on the IMPORTANT THINGS
cripes, who the hell cares anymore? Aren't an illegal war, immeasurable government corruption, corporate control of our lives and the selling out of working Americans for cheap trinkets ENOUGH to slap this guy down for several years?

Let's focus on things that MATTER, please. Focusing on this finger is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

IMHO, refusing to focus on the Our Leader's modified Nazi salute ignores an important facet of this creature's mental make-up and what he really thinks about people outside the inner NeoCon circle.

6. Remember those stories about Bush flying into obscene fits and rages?
Apparently, insiders are saying that he flies off the handle very easily, shouting obscenities at his staffers. It was mentioned last year in Capitol Hill Blue.

Bush Taking Anti-Depressants to Control Mood Swings
By CHB Staff
Jul 28, 2004

President George W. Bush is taking anti-depressant drugs to control his erratic behavior, depression and paranoia, Capitol Hill Blue has learned. The prescription drugs, administered by Col. Richard J. Tubb, the White House physician, can impair the President’s mental faculties and decrease both his physical capabilities and his ability to respond to a crisis, administration aides admit privately.

“It’s a double-edged sword,” says one aide. “We can’t have him flying off the handle at the slightest provocation but we also need a President who is alert mentally.” Tubb prescribed the anti-depressants after a clearly-upset Bush stormed off stage on July 8, refusing to answer reporters' questions about his relationship with indicted Enron executive Kenneth J. Lay.

“Keep those motherfuckers away from me,” he screamed at an aide backstage. “If you can’t, I’ll find someone who can.”

Bush’s mental stability has become the topic of Washington whispers in recent months. Capitol Hill Blue first reported on June 4 about increasing concern among White House aides over the President’s wide mood swings and obscene outbursts.

8. Um...
look at the position of the wrist. That's a side-on view. His wrist isn't turned as it would have to be for it to be his middle finger. His arm is at about a 65-70° angle, and the camera is below, so it adds perspective. It's a thumb; viewed from that angle, in the "thumbs-up" gesture, the thumb about evenly bisects the bent first joint of the index finger. Try it yourself.

would be only about 1/2 - 1/3 the size of the hand in that picture... there's no way it's a 'thumbs up'..

14. No way it's his middle finger...
unless he's recently had either the radius or ulna in his right arm removed. I'm a skinny guy, but my wrist isn't that narrow viewed from the position my hand would have to be in to do what you say Bush is doing there.

16. Hate to pop you balloon Spider, but I tried it like you said.
If you have your wrist turned to the side, the 4 bent fingers would make more of an angle than what's shown in the photo. Try it yourself, putting your hand in front of your monitor.....you'll see what I mean.

..but on a more personal level, I want it to be the middle finger so the religious right wing will maybe see that shrub isn't the saint they thought he is.

10. It's definitely a thumb
You can't analyze just one picture, you have to watch the pertinent section of the video in slow motion. I had the Leno show Tivo'd and I was able to see it slow speed and it's defintely a thumb. He does this slight twist with his hand witch gives you the false impression it is his finger. I wish it were his middle finger too (which I thought all day long while at work watching it on a very small video feed), but facts are facts.

15. That's what I have
What we need is the direct feed of the MSNBC broadcast. We are in a funny catch-22 since the networks treat flipping the bird like the F-word.

I Tivo Leno HD every night and I watch it on a HD Screen. Although I had thought it was the middle finger all day long looking at the pictures and the .mov on my computer at work, it definitely is a thumn.

It was funy while it lasted!

21. A thumb that projects a good 3 inches above his 2nd knuckle?
I'm not a trained anatomist but it just doesn't look like a thumb to me. I may be wrong, but my eyes are telling me it can't possibly be a thumb unless Bush has an unusually long thumb.

Believe me, I wish it were his Middle finger, but if you see it in a normal or high resolutiona and slow, you immediately realize it is his thumb. I'm not making this up.

19. You just get a bad impression from the low resolution .mov and the picture
I admit, it LOOKS like a thumb when you see just the picture of the low resolution .mov, but it you see it in normal resolution and in slow motion it is his thumb.

But facts are facts. Once you see it the way I have you immediately recognize that it is in fact Bush's thumb that is sticking up. I'm just trying to report it the way it is, not the way I'd like it to be.

Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 09:50 PM by rocknation
Even the smiley proves it: you can't do a thumbs up with your lower arm straight up and your wrist locked. You have to bend your wrist away from your body, which tilts your elbow inward. Otherwise, you look like you're trying to hitch a ride!

25. Here's the best way to repro
Stick your right arm straight out, up about 15 degrees Make a fist and stick you thumb out. Tilt your wrist back about 10 degrees relative to your arm. That's what we are seeing and getting fooled into thinking it is his middle finger.

The wrist looks "narrow" from this angle so the thumb doesn't look like a thumb - it looks like a middle finger.

27. Some people have poor "visual closure" and the are
apparently incapable of seeing that bushie is giving the world the bird.

Of course we here at DU don't need to see the image to know that bushie is always giving the world THE finger -- that our opinion is worth nothing.

I have excellent visual closure (I can spot something by only seeing a portion of it -- my mind can complete the image and allow me to find needles in hay stacks.)

Yes this is a silly thing to argue about -- but in a way this supports what we've been saying for years about bushie and the GOPigs that are in power.

When the whole world came out in opposition against the world -- bush said FUCK YOU -- to the whole world. Bushie is a traitor and he is telling the world -- FUCK YOU.

So this silliness is relevant -- to shows his true character -- he is a socio/psychopath.

29. If thats his middle finger then.....
he has little baby fists and im gonna send my little 12 year old nephew to kick his ass.

Seriously, it is odd that he has such a straight and skinny looking thumb, but blurry pixels end up distorting some images like this.

His whole fist in this still shot doesnt even look like a normal human, man's fist, its too small. so unless he's either an alien or a nubby, thats definitely a thumb, with his fist at a straight-ahead, 45 degree angle.

Pixels can be deceiving!!!

Clearly in this picture, he is holding a knife. The top protrusion is the handle of the knife and shining blade is visible below his wrist.

It looks like he is about to stick a knife HARD into the back of the person in front of him.

Just takes a bit of hand rotation to get it right. And the pic makes it look like the skin is continuous where the digit is raised which would make it have to be a thumb.

46. I can't get the top of my hand to look like that if my thumb is up.
The top of the hand, that the "protrusion" is sticking out of, is just too wide to be a hand turned sideways (with the thumb up).
If the protrusion is a middle finger, the shape of the hand at the top makes more sense.

Is it just me? Anybody else see that?
