Revised List of Plame Leak Witnesses and Interviewees
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 09:54 PM by joemurphy
Here's a new update of the Rove case's witnesses and interviewees
The update was prompted by reports that John Bolton was not interviewed in connection with the Plame Leak investigation and did not testify before Fitzgerald's grand jury. A prior MSNBC report stating that John Bolton testified before the grand jury appears to have been erroneous. Owing to this fact Bolton's name has been deleted from the list

Bolton, apparently, WAS interviewed in connection with a joint State Department/CIA investigation into the Niger uranium hoax and, reportedly failed to advise the Senate of this fact in a questionnaire he submitted prior to his being vetted by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee incidental to his UN nomination.

The following list is something I've put together from my Googling. If anyone has any other additions or corrections, let me know. I'll post the list from time to time in the future as further information comes in. Please provide a source for an information you provide.

7. There seems to be confusion....MSNBC is standing by their story.
Report on Hardball:

DAVID SHUSTER, NBC CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A witness who testified at the grand jury and lawyers for other witnesses say the memo was written in July of 2003, identified Valerie Wilson, also known as Valerie Plame, as a CIA officer, and cited her in a paragraph marked S for sensitive.

According to lawyers, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and undersecretaries, including John Bolton, gave testimony about this memo. And a lawyer for one State Department official says his client testified that, as President Bush was flying to Africa on Air Force One two years ago, Press Secretary Ari Fleischer could be seen reading the document on board.

<http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8666472 />

MSNBC reports to TWN that its source on Bolton being interviewed by the Valerie Plame Wilson grand jury "is unimpeachable."

MSNBC is standing "firmly" by its story -- and is shirking off the fact that other networks and major news organizations have been unable to confirm what MSNBC feels is a solid fact.

CNN has not yet responded to TWN on the White House source who allegedly stated that the Bolton report "was erroneous."

There are now rumblings, given what has been reported in the media, that various Senators may request the State Department to clarify whether or not Mr. Bolton met with the grand jury and/or its investigators. If he did so, they may ask when this took place.

This disclosure is a requirement of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which while Bolton's nomination has passed through the Committee without support, is still tasked with maintaing "the record" on John Bolton so as to inform the whole Senate.

11. MSNBC seems to have gotten it wrong.

TPM/Josh Marshall report:

"Apparently, according to the AP, the State Department is confirming Sen. Biden's claim that John Bolton failed to tell senators that he was interviewed in the joint State/CIA IG probe into the US government's use of the forged Niger papers.

Late Update: I've gotten a lot of emails about this. So I wanted to clear up an seemingly widespread confusion. In questioning today, the State Department has apparently backed up Bolton's claim that he did not testify before Patrick Fitzgerald's criminal investigation. The reference above is to the joint State Department-CIA IG investigation from 2003. These are totally different things, though they are both related to the same underlying issue -- the Niger forgeries.

14. yes, I read that earlier...
Isn't it possible that he was interviewed and also testified? I don't know really. I would find it hard to believe that he isn't part of Fitzgerald's probe. I am not second guessing your work. You have done a fine job. I just don't think it is beyond the State Department to lie.

17. Schuster was just on Hardball and he backed off on
his prior report that Bolton testified before Fitz's grand jury. He said that apparently he didn't. He says the matter is continuing to be investigated.

No other sources have reported that Bolton testified other than MSNBC.

6. Haven't been able to find a reputable report confirming
if Tweety's been interviewed or has testified. It's logical that he's been at least talked to, but I haven't seen anything on it.

9. I agree with you on this.
Tweety's probably keeping mum so he'll look less hypocritical when he claims Rove and Libby were just to political operatives doing damage control.

in the "spirit of cooperation" that has always pervaded the White House.

13. Have you found any mention of James Woolsey?
This has been bugging me lately. Could Judith Miller's source be James Woolsey? Would he have known Valerie Plame when he was the CIA Director? During the Iraq War run up Woolsey was feeding INC guys directly to the DIA, bypassing the CIA and State, and running around publicly saying that the CIA didn't know what it was talking about because he dislikes the CIA (and everyone there disliked him). Woolsey is a neocon, and also good friends with Judy Miller - in fact, he wrote a preface to one of her WMD books. Woolsey would certainly know who Wilson was ....plus as CIA Director, Plame was one of his employees. Supposedly Millers source told her about Wilson and his wife, the CIA agent. Woolsey would know both.

somehow getting into Bush's State of the Union address. I'm a little fuzzy on this. Clue me in if you can. How's he connected?
