1. Bolton won't change any votes in 2006.
There are far more important matters to the public.

10. Gasoline prices, energy prices, the economy, jobs, the war, etc.
Those things will matter to the public more than Bolton. Also, the coming Repug deluge of wedge issues: immigration and gays and abortion. Those will get all the right wingers to the polls.

By Nov. 2006 Bolton will barely be remembered.

13. but it will be another abuse of power
why isn't gasoline prices bothering them now?
you can only snow them so long by telling them that energy prices are not affecting people

3. If we let the public know that facts
The President shall have power to fill up all vacancies
that may happen during the recess of the Senate,
by granting commissions which shall expire at the end of their next session.

<http://straylight.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitu ... >

Bolton's opening did not happen during the recess.

For the Shrub to make Bolton a recess appointment would be illegal and unconstitutional.

6. You're assuming we will have elections in 2006.
The way things are going they may not be necessary. The coup will be complete.

22. Nah, there will be at least the appearance of elections.
I'm still not convinced that the 04 election was stolen, but it may have been. If the cons really do know how to steal elections, they really don't have to worry what people think about Bolton.

8. It's "politics as usual" to most people.
The Republicans and their supporters will think that Bush is "showing strength".

The progressives will complain.

The "moderates" will wonder who Bolton is and why the "News" isn't covering important stuff like the dangers of baton twirling or the sex in video games.

9. It'll show once again
that Bush tends to appoint people who are obviously nuts and incompetent and would never pass a review board. Check out today's Doonesbury cartoon on this very topic.

12. Bolton is thought of as an arrogant bully
by the public. Even Trent Lott is against a recess appointment because the Senate is a co-equal branch of the government and should not be overlooked. There is also much thought that Bolton has been marginalized and will be ineffective.

A recess appointment by W will just reinforce the whole arrogance of this administration and their willingness to run the country from the WH.

do you think they are worried about backlash or turn about if the Democrats ever get power again?

18. I think Lott is worried about the legacy of the Senate
which now appears to be that of diminishing if not removing the separation of powers among the branches. Bush and his far right wingers are leading us into a hell hole. The Senate may as well be deleted if it becomes only an echo of the presidency.

15. Most Americans aren't aware and don't care
about what Ambassadors do, or the fact that Bush has appointed many old cronies to ambassador posts who know little or nothing about the countries to which they're assigned, much less the language.

If Bolton gets appointed the UN Ambassador, I hope someone antagonizes him and really gets his blood up and brings out his emotional instability. Hopefully, he'll end up giving the bird at the General Assembly or fly into a fit of anger and moon the entire Security Council. That would perhaps focus public attention on the fact that Bush appoints psychopaths to positions of influence, being one himself.

Sure, the appointment of Bolton will increase the divide between the left and the right among the politically aware. But it will largely go unnoticed by the general population, in my opinion.

16. But ambassador to the U.N. is different
They will pay attention. Remember, that the majority of U.S. citizens did NOT think we should go into Iraq without U.N. approval.

Regardless of what this administration and the far-right think, the U.N. is thought of as a way to bring peace in a united effort by the majority of people. They know some corrections need to be made but don't think an arrogant bully like Bolton can achieve those changes.

23. If Bolton gets indited by the GJ or is prosecuted for lying to
Congress on his disclosure form, he will bring additional disgrace on Shrub and all the Senators who insisted on him being the Ambassador.

I say, Shrub SHOULD appoint him as a recess appointment. Let them go down together! They deserve each other!

24. It depends on if/how the Democrats use it in the election
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 01:51 AM by Azathoth
It won't hurt us, but it also won't help us unless we are successful at making an issue out of it. The GOP is extremely proficient at shifting the public focus away from things like this.

25. Neither. The repukes OWN THE VOTING MACHINES.
We kicked rape-puke ASS in the 2004 election, and THEY STOLE IT ANYWAY!

The majority of Americans are on our side. It just doesn't appear that way, because elections keep getting stolen.
