The framers of Iraq's constitution appear likely to enshrine Islam as the main basis of law in the country — a stronger role than the United States had hoped for and one some Iraqis fear will mean a more fundamentalist regime.

Arab constitutions vary widely over the role of Islamic law, ranging from Lebanon, where the word "Islam" never appears, to Saudi Arabia, which says the Quran itself is its constitution.

Culture weighs far more heavily than the constitution and law, particularly when it comes to women. In Gulf nations — where the constitutions spell out a slightly lesser role for Islamic law, or Sharia, than in Egypt — women are more segregated and wear more conservative veils covering the entire face.

2. So nothing is going to change there

Democracy my ass! If you haven't watch Greg Palast's segment on Iraq and oil. It shows how the Bush group didn't want elections or anything and they had someone in mind to replace Saddam (my guess is Allawi) but he was pressured for everything and it happened. He's only doing this for political purposes and could really give a damn.

12. agreed with a twist: the collusive Maoist/capitalist end-game...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4088702.stm many noises on the impropriety of the web vis-a-vis access to info from there as well as from seemingly as inconsequential & buffoon-esque a source as i.e. tom delay stating his dislike for people doing "research on the web" will lead to a union between they who make no bones about it & they that only say they care for freedom & liberty. they do not care for us so much as they are intoxicated by the smell of our money imo
