He made the distinction between "The white house called me" and "I was interviewing a senior white house official".

He makes no secret that a senior administration figure(two of them in fact) told him that Plame worked for the CIA.

He says he won't reveal his source.

Joe Wilson STILL will not say that his wife is a CIA agent -- he knows the drill.

Even during the interviews about this incident, Wilson's been prefacing each statement with 'hypothetically speaking, if my wife WERE a CIA operative...", etc, etc... He has NOT come out and said she was (and in fact, has also described why it would be bad for Novak to name her as one if she WEREN'T an agent).

I was not really sure myself whether she was or wasn't an agent until I read that the CIA had requested an investigation (and I've been following the story since it broke).

I don't buy that Wilson told Novak. No way.

It is not against the law for a reporter to publish what he knows.
Whoever leaked to him broke the law. Novak did not.

Or as an accessory after a crime? I know journalists can go to jail for refusing to name sources in some situations; could this be one?

the only time, afaik, that journalists have been jailed is under a contempt of court citation. I don't know of any journalist being jailed under a criminal conviction for publishing truthful information.

Now, it's possible that Novak could be charged with contempt if there were a criminal grand jury investigation, but I doubt that will happen. There are enough people who know the leakers' identities. I think the identities will be revealed without trying to force Novak to talk.
