Deja Vu All Over Again
I popped my political cherry growing up during the Watergate scandal.

Us kids at Duffield Elementary School were pratically unanimous in our agreement that Nixon was a crook and he had to go waaay back in 1973.

Needless to say, I watched those hearings very closely, trying to at best, fathom the meaning of the entire proceedings and confirming that Nixon's crookedness was thoroughly demonstrated.

A year later in August 1974 when he announced that he was going to resign and on the following day stepped on that helicopter and flew off into the sunset, I felt vindicated in the knowledge that democracy won out in the end.

When Shrub was elected, I noticed little things about his pResidency that reminded me of Nixon's: the secrecy, the paranoia, the arrogance, the mendacity, the willingness to abuse military power and the utter contempt for the will of the people.

These things gave me the clue that it would only be a matter a time before a scandal would erupt and come back and bite him in the ass, which would result in a cover up and then further scandal.

I'm only going to make one prediction, that this Niger scrap is only the beginning. If the pressure keeps up, Bush is going shoot himself in the other foot. His personality all but ensures it.

The only thing that will could cover his ass would be for the press to go back to sleep. I just hope that they will wake up and smell the blood in the water and strike for the kill.

1. I feel the same thing happening
Nixon blew his 'getting out of it' the moment he went into coverup mode when there is no turning back, and that led to his demise.

AWOL-boy just went into coverup mode, and if he doesn't come clean in a day or so imho, there will be no chance for a reassessment and correction, and it will be too late to turn back.

3. He can't come clean -- not at all
What's he going to say, "Yes, I'm admitting it. I lied about the Niger thing and so much more to get us into war."

There's really nothing he can say. They've cooked up a new "excuse" -- blaming France for the British intel, but that won't work at all either. NOT if the press continues to pay attention.

He's deadmeat, and all that needs to be done is for the press, Congress and the people to bury him!

2. This is where the "character thing" comes in.
The little emperor has had it all his way for 2.5 years. His "Trifecta's" and "Life would be easier if I was a dictator" musings have been piling up like gas soaked rags in the corner of weld shop. His wreckless disregard for the interests of the majority of Americans have been consistant and methodical. We didn't want this war, we want to have 9/11 fully investigated, he had no mandate to ram through his taxcuts. His Homeland Security Bill is now understood to be the 1st step in a take-over of our democracy.

He's run out of good will, his lies and motives are totally exposed. And the undeserving, underachieving fratboy will finally get the comeuppance he deserves.

I intensely disliked Nixon, but I never thought I'd live long enough to deal with an unelected fraud, who has arrogantly screwed this country to the point that I truely hope he spends a long time in a federal prison contemplating his treasonous actions against the citizens of this country.

5. I'm not hoping for the economy to tank
But with the Repugs in control it's all but guaranteed.

Of all things, this is going to make Snorty McCokespoon more vulnerable than anything.

Resentment against his incompetent fiscal policies is the open door that opposition will gain access.

His own actions will demand a negative spotlight.

Time to buy some popcorn and watch the sparks fly.

7. it IS deja vu

Enron... 9-11 hearings... Cheney's energy papers... ALL of them, and more, spawned a frenzy of "Drip Drip Drip, It's Watergate Again!" threads in GD. :eyes:

History does not repeat itself. The confluence of events, time, and place that led to Watergate won't be repeated in 1,000 lifetimes.

Watergate inured us with a layer of cynicism so deep, that the bar is too high, and the SOTU/Niger uranium/WMD angle won't undo it, even if it IS more serious.

Sorry folks, it's not that I enjoy puncturing your unrealistic hopes and dreams, but somebody has to. ;-)

Oh, and I posted the same skeptical poo-poos on all those previous threads too. So I am fully expecting a barrage of "BUT THIS TIME IT'S DIFFERENT!" or "I JUST FEEL IT THIS TIME!!" or "WELL, IT WILL HAPPEN IF THE MEDIA DOES ITS JOB!" or the truly insulting "I WAS THERE! WERE YOU??" (Yes, I watched Cronkite too).

So... I can't imagine any of you can persuade me in the face of history and the unvarnished Zomb... Coyote Truth. ;-)

8. Been waiting for the shrub to push Ari down on tv...
For you youngsters, Nixon pushed his press secretary on tv. Well, we have the new guy, maybe something will happen.
