A new name for "Nigergate"
Nigergate and weaponsgate and the other "gates" are really getting annoying, it seems to make the issue less important. We called it "Watergate" with nixon because it took place in the Watergate hotel.

I'm suggesting the Uranium Scandal, or The Nigerian Affair...the press might prefer those over "yellowcakegate"

Any other ideas that don't involve -gate ?

Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 12:44 AM by Ivory_Tower
Simple and to the point.

Or maybe I just need some sleep...

or maybe "Prevarigate" --- get it? Okay, okay, I'm going to sleep now.....

6. It might sell
I'm thinking of the braindead masses that might be intrigued by this name...and the 16-25 yr olds that will look into it thinking it's some kind of porn. (I'm right in that age group and I know i would)

Of course Uranium Scandal or Uranium Lie are just as effective, and to the point.

9. it's not Nigerian though
Nigerian, refers to Nigeria, large nation on the coast.

Nigerois, refers to Niger, land-locked nation directly north of Nigeria.

"The Nigerois Affair" though...

11. hmmm
I honestly forgot that there was a niger and a nigeria...I never really liked geography when it came to Africa, too many of the countries would cease to exist, or change names when I was in middleschool, so each map had something different on it...and that wa sonly about 6 years ago

15. There've only been two map changes in Africa
In the last six years that I know of.... Eritrea became an independant nation after a long bloody civil war with Ethiopia. Zaire changed its name to The Popular Democratic Republic of Congo, not to be confused with The Republic of Congo, which is just north of PDR Congo across the Congo River.

4. I notice some in the media trying to define this very narrowly
I think a broader name would serve us better.

"Bush's Lies" would be too good, but it won't happen.

"The Bush Credibility Gap"

"The Credibility Deficit"

I was heartened to see the Olbermann show opening up the aluminum tubes lie front.

It was a broad pattern of lies, not just 16 words.

The lies were not only throughout the SOTU, they stretch back to the selection of 2000.

I like that one. Because that's what we want to get in people's minds for the 2004 election. Tell your friends!! :-)

7. How about "Pattern of Deception which...
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 12:45 AM by VolcanoJen
... led this Great Nation into an Immoral and Unnecessary War Affair?"

OK... not so catchy...

I do agree that the "Gates" have grown tiresome. I always liked the sound of "Iran-Contra Affair," so something along those lines might stick. How about

"State of the Union Affair,"

or to please our Republican friends, the

"16-Word Affair,"

as the press seems to have latched onto the SOTU lie most fervently? Hey, we know it's a Pattern we're talking about, but if it's catchy and easy-to-understand, it'll stick like glue.

ON EDIT: changed spacing

17. ok :-)
I thought it had to do with yellow cake, silly me.

I don't know of any Uranium ores that are actually yellow though, Uraninite is gray, and Uranophane is greenish. UO3 is bright orange... Anyway...

16. Yellow cake is uranium ore...
... I believe (but hey, I'm no scientist.) Bush alleged in his SOTU speech that Saddam Hussein had tried to obtain yellow cake from Africa.

Hence, YellowCakeGate is the Watergate "play on words" that refers to the Bush/Uranium/Niger scandal.

Sorry if I'm oversimplifying,
Jennifer :-)

The Betty Crocker Affair, We're using silly stuff because the truth is so painful.

I hope the papers don't come up with some idiotic name, what bush has been done is treasonous. Time to be honest and call it was it is.

23. we shouldn't limit it to the niger documents...
...because there are other lies that took us to war.

Limiting it to those documents suits Rove.
