DUer's! here's how we can help the folks in the Gulf Coast
Once again the Red Cross is mobilizing workers and supplies from all over the country to help those who are facing this catastrophe

3. Finally a sensible thread...Kicked and recommended.
All of the gloom and doom threads serve no purpose but to stir emotions. This is something that will really help.

16. Hmm, sometimes people need an excuse to panic.
I live in MN and we get tornado warnings all the time, but seldom actually go into the basement.

Sometimes it takes your friends telling you, "Hey, stupid, Git!"

Still, if one of our DUers is sitting on top of a floating house, it could be the Red Cross in a boat picking people up afterward.

So this thread is still better.

5. Speaking from personal experience
I am very grateful of the free water and ice that shows up after a hurricane. It's been in the upper 90's here recently and it doesn't cool down after sundown. I float money to the redcross when storms hit our friends in Florida and Mississippi.

thank you - thank you - thank you.

7. Donating Blood will be extremely helpful too.
The injuries afterwords and the strain on the blood supply will be enormous in that region. For those who have their health, a bit of time and are low on funds, this is the gift of life and counts more than cash to the person who needs blood right now.

27. I am with you on that one ...
it make me see red when I think of all the $$$ that has been squandered. I guess those tax cuts bought votes. The rest of us who vote for our tax $$$ to go to taking care of those in need here will still be doing what we can. That says a lot about us ... but it sure as hell burns my ass.

Oh - and done, as much as I can anyway.

15. Yes, this would be a good case for Halliburten who has made so
much money to shift some of that to the people in need here. There is money that could be cut loose for here.

and giving ahead of the storm helps them get ready. Just gave blood a week ago, so can't help that way, but can spare a few bucks.

I was wondering what I could do. Your post reminded me I could volunteer at the Red Cross. I live in Denver, and I think we have a big call center here. Bound to be busy and in need of volunteers. I'm giving them a call.

22. Check With Your Employer
If this hurricane is as destructive as they think, some companies may do matching donations.

25. I just donated and didn't think of that
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 09:48 PM by nuxvomica
My employer matches and I think I just need to send a form to the Red Cross. Thanks for the reminder.

edit: I just checked the confirmation e-mail and they remind you of the matching. They included a link to find if your company matches but mine wasn't listed though I know it does. Folks should check with their HR department to make sure.

To the Red Cross online donation site via secure connection:

https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

I'm sure local blood drives will be starting tomorrow, and of course you can always volunteer to help:

Awesome job to the moderators for the fast action to help!!
