Rove ran Ashcroft's campaigns. Rove was on Ashcroft's payroll.
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 05:44 PM by scottxyz
"How long was Rove a consultant to Ashcroft? A decade? More? How many campaigns did he run? How much was he paid? Etc.

Do the Bushies seriously propose that the Attorney General should be left in charge of a criminal investigation in which his own chief political operative ... is one of the prime suspects?"

How Bush Chose Ashcroft
"Bush's father knew Ashcroft well, and Rove had done campaign work for him since 1985 and assured Bush that Ashcroft was solid."

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/2001/01/22/chose.html

"...Rove, whose company had done direct mail for Ashcroft over the years..."

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2001/12/10/politics/main320686.shtml

Even NewsMax links Rove and Ashcroft from way back:

"Karl Rove, Bush's trusted political adviser, had handled Ashcroft's political campaigns..."

3. It's hard searching for this on google
If you do

Rove Ashcroft

on google you get all sorts of stuff about Treasongate.

The trick - to get the OLD stuff on Rove & Ashcroft - is to use the special "-" prefix on a search term in google, to get rid of the stuff that you don't want.

For example, to search for stuff on Henry Ford (not Gerald), you could do:

Ford Henry -Gerald

on google.

Of course, you could also quote the set of words that go together, and do:

"Henry Ford"

In this case, I'm doing stuff like:

Rove Ashcroft -Wilson -Plame -CIA

on google.

7. Wow!
Thanks - I'm going to check that out!

I have been getting a bit suspicious of the Google monopoly. Heard there was some lawsuit against them for linking to slanderous info on Scientology or something - and google complied and suppressed the links.

The good thing about the wordwide web is the diversity - time for google to get some real competition!

11. I downloaded it and I love it!
That's a great search engine! I love to get out of the Google monopoly. I also love to be on the web but NOT be in Interent Explorer.

Very clean interface also. I'm a programmer - I think my next program could borrow a few pointers from the Copernic look-n-feel.

8. Ashcroft could get in trouble too
He needs to be careful. If he doesn't to a proper investigation, someone could go after him for obstruction of justice.

12. More on the Rove-Ashcroft link
Here's a long article that also mentions the Rove-Ashcroft link. (You have to register to read it - it's free though.)

This quote is on page 2:

"He {Rove} did mail for U.S. senators Orrin Hatch, of Utah, and Connie Mack, of Florida, and for Governor John Ashcroft, of Missouri."

13. The Rove/Ashcroft Connection
"Bush knew Ashcroft mostly by reputation when the Missourian flew to Austin on Dec. 20, but had long considered him the kind of guy he wanted for AG. Bush's father knew Ashcroft well, and Rove had done campaign work for him since 1985 and assured Bush that Ashcroft was solid. In the meeting, Bush made it clear that he expected his Cabinet members to be team players, not independent operators."

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/time/2001/01/22/chose.html

"{S}ince Rove is at the center of the speculation, and since Rove has worked on Ashcroft's campaigns for almost 20 years, I'd say there even if it doesn't fit the legal definition of a conflict of interest, it certainly fits the concept of a 'perception of a conflict of interest', and are they supposed to avoid that, too?

This may be just a bit more ammo for the effort to get Ashcroft to turn this over to an independent investigator."

18. why not go to their website, find the reporters & email them?
I've emailed several and have gotten a response in every case except one. However, some reporters do not put their email on the site probably because they do NOT want inputs.

14. Bush asked DoJ for permission to delay their directive for a day
And permission was granted. A federal prosecutor wonders who granted it and why that was allowed. You can hear this on NPR "Investigating Leaks" link.
