Thought for the day....
My boss is editing a volume about ethics in negotiation, and he's including this terrific chapter about "political lies".

We had to scan most of this stuff to get it into electronic form, and because scanning often mucks up a perfectly good hard-copy, I've had to proof-read all this material.

I came across this paragraph today:

"Political lies, so often assumed to be trivial by those who tell them, rarely are. They cannot be trivial when they affect so many people and when they are so peculiarly likely to be imitated, used to retaliate, and spread from a few to many. When political representatives or entire governments arrogate to themselves the right to lie, they take power from the public that would not have been given up voluntarily.

Bok, S. Lying: Moral Choice in Public and Private Life, New York: Pantheon Books, 1978.

1. But . . . but . . . but . . .
this only applies when a Democrat is having sex! Otherwise, it's okay.

2. Nice quote
for another perspective

Political language. . . is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
