I, and I think I speak for many others, am glad you are here. I know I used the word "newbies" earlier today but that was a bad choice of words for someone who frequents "that other site". Of course, none of you would be like that. :-)


If you have any questions about politics or DU, feel free to speak up and ask. You will ALWAYS get help, even if it's one sentence or a link to a useful web page.

I still feel like a newbie.

Actually I've lurked for much too long and finally started posting in the last few days. I just couldn't take the madness that has ensued recently.

I was immediately attracted by the healthy community here. Usually you're used to such hostility in politics, but I love how there can be arguments alongside well wishes here. It's really telling in a time where everyone has gone insane with 'patriotism'.

yes it can be fast and furious here but its an exceptional community with all kinds of people represented

I've seen flame wars happen over piddly issues but, for the most part, people here are friendly and open to everyone.

Many of us here have been registered for a long time but mostly lurk, and only post now and then in short spurts. I mostly lurk. This is my NEWS site! Biased, but correct!

if that thing about the u_id number at the end of your profile button url is true (remove 1 and the number is when you registered), I think my number beats some of yours!

I "lurked" for a few years because I am computer stupid. My sweetheart figured it out for me.

and those are just the ones who I've run into. All three had less than ten posts, and were "new registrations" today.

I lurked for a year before I even registered a screen name in March of 2004. I use DU for the news and am not all that much of a frequent poster.

We ran of warm maple syrup a few days ago. Until the next batch arrives, the secret initiations the next brunch of delicious pancakes are on hold. (It's just as well -- the local constabulary has asked us to cool it for a while, especially since they're getting lots of complaints about the stolen chickens.)

I read DU everyday and have been registered here since Feb 04 or thereabouts.
It's a fantastic resource and most days I spend more time here than anywhere else online.
Hard to tell from my post count though. :blush:

Most DUers welcome people checking their facts and are willing to retract something when someone else can dispute it effectively. Very few will just cling to a pet argument just for the sake of being "right". Not saying there aren't egomaniacs on the left, but they do seem to be concentrated in the conservative ranks.

I have two "newbie" questions though...

1) I've seen that we put "nt" or "n/t" after titles where no message follows. What does this nt mean?

2) What is the origin/meaning of the "tin foil hat"?

Tin foil hat means that it's a controversial theory. There used to be a saying that if you wore a tin foil hat the mind rays couldn't reach you. :P

I've been lurking over a year, and registered a few months ago, but finally decided to post today! :hi:

Though I've been a member for over a year it took me several months just to get to 100 and will likely be longer to reach twice that, so I can't imagine ever reaching 1000 at this rate.

Like many here, while I visit the site almost daily, I can only post sporadically I have so much else to do and look up both on-line and off and it takes me awhile to write due to having to collect my thoughts and typing skills.

But maybe someday I will and do honestly feel like us non-members of the "1000 Club" (or even "no-star" posters for that matter) are sometimes looked down on as witnessed by some of the posts I've seen, but it's nice to know our contributions are appreciated. Thanks.

I've actually have been lurking since late 2001. I just started posting after the 2004 election!

I do read constantly and I love it here. It's my new home within my home. I thank you for all the informative posts - I have no idea what I would do without you! Especially today when I do not know what to do with my rage with this administration. I selfishly feel that the city of New Orleans has been taken away from me. Thank you for the perfect opportunity to vent!

But upping my post count every day. I read a lot, and post when I feel moved to. DU is a great source of reason in a society that so seems to lack it these last few years. This is a great group of people that I'm happy to be a part of. :)

Then, you will lose nothing and grow a LOT!!!

You just download your photos there and then copy the link here, and voila -- there's your picture.

Where can I find photo bucket?

http://www.photobucket.com is one resource used here often.
You do have to register to use it though.

I prefer http://imagevenue.com/
No registration. It goes directly to a page where you can browse your files and upload them to your computer. A few seconds later, voila, copy the web-address from your browser, paste it into your post and put the tags
{img}X{\img}where x= the link to your picture

(substitute brackets for parentheses
in my above example.)
They are on the same keys, just don't hit shift.
I had to post them as {} to demonstrate.

Set yourself up with a user name and a password and then just put your photos in there. It'll say "browse" and you can go to "My Pictures" or whatever on your computer, pick the one you want, hit submit (I think -- I'm doing this by memory), and then wait. It'll show up at the bottom with a link underneath it. It's pretty easy --I didn't have too much trouble figuring it out the first time, and I'm not the most computer literate person in the world.

Though I'm not overly new, I just haven't felt the need to post until today.

I've been here since spring 2004. Spend at least an hour a day here and usually alot more. I havn't watched MSM since the election and have found I can't stomach one second of it now. The bonus is I haven't heard **'s voice for almost 10 months!

general welcome. I see new members being welcomed on their first or second post and I've gotten to over 130 and half a year without a hello. I think it's my signature line, "A Republic, not an Empire" which, while the title of a RW book whose author I disagree with in nearly everything but the war, is also a valid Democratic sentiment.

I too have been lurking forever. Believe me, I would never have gotten through the last election cycle without you wonderful people to remind me I am not alone.

I've been a lurker since before the election but decided to join. It's addicting.

The last time I did, I was flamed and called a Freeptroll. (I didn't stick around to read the responses, but was told about them by the friend and long-time DUer who encouraged me to register.)

I've been lurking since Camp Casey sprang up because I needed news and sanity, but I've been loath to post again for fear someone would recognize my s/n and say, "That's the guy!"

But I guess I don't give a flying * about that now. I need news and sanity again.

If you have 3 or less posts, don't come into a thread in which Jimmy Carter's name wasn't mentioned, and start talking about how bad his "25 percent interest rates" were. Jeez, at least wait until you have four posts to do that -- makes it a little less obvious.
