Drivers Report $3 (And Higher) Gas, Shortages

Hurricane Katrina has caused huge increases in gas prices -- as well as lines and some shortages -- around the country.

...

A southwest Houston station listed a price of $3.31 Wednesday afternoon. Some customers told Houston television station KPRC that it was 80 cents lower a day earlier.

...

"I was driving down (the street). I noticed their sign. It said $2.75 and I needed gas. So, I thought, 'I'll pull up and turn around and get gas,'" driver Francis Townsend said. "By the time I got to their pump, the price had gone to $3.31," he said. "I think that's a little bit steep, to go up 56 cents on a turnaround."

...

In Lancaster, Pa., television station WGAL reported that one station with gasoline at $2.59 per gallon was the cheapest gas on the busy stretch and cars lined up to fill up. Just a block away, another filling station was empty because it was charging 20 cents more per gallon.
One clerk told WGAL his station sold 4,000 gallons of gas in 45 minutes. Normally, he said, the station will sell 3,000 gallons in a day.

1. $3.19 here in metro Detroit...
where public transportation is a looney concept and driving is the only option.

3. $2.79 for regular in the Seattle area.
That's the best I've seen. I've seen it as high as $2.91 at other stations. Premium is at or above $3.00 a gallon.

5. I just filled up a bunch of gas cans at $2.999 tonight.
Yesterday it was 2.749 at the same station. I don't imagine prices are exactly gonna go down for a while, and the prospect of shortages seems reasonable.
