My sister (an RN) is going to LA
I am so very proud of her. She is 53 years old, and volunteered for the Vancouver emerg. group that has been mentioned here (on DU). She has worked in emerg. nursing for many many years, as well as up in the northern native reserves. She KNOWS about third world/disaster situations. Did I say how proud I was of her? Crap, I just realised she was going to go to the Big Easy before me... how selfish can someone be? But seriously, I give her my love and best wishes. I told her not to drink the water.

I'm staying here, safe at home in Calgary. My sister, on the other hand, is going from her very comfortable life in the Okanagan Valley (in BC) and, literally putting her life on the line. To be frank, I think I'm more afraid FOR the bad guys there (if that's true) then her. She's scary. I could tell you stories.... I love the ones about the axe fights she broke up in Northern Manitoba reserves. Really really scary white woman. Just sayin' BTW, she KNOWS how to shoot. She was the top female shot in Manitoba back in the day with a rifle and a hand gun.

8. Thank you everyone
I will forward this to her. I know she will appreciate all the love. And again, I wasn't kidding... she's scary. She's about 5'2" of unadulterated attitude. She gets "thin lips" (as I like to call them) when she's very annoyed. Don't ever cross the thin lips. Just sayin'

My favourite story from her time in Northern Manitoba:

2 guys show up, at about 3 a.m. all covered in blood. They bang on the Nursing Station door. M. answers; they've been in an "axe fight". Reeking of liquor; she gets them in to the room, starts cleaning and stitching (no anesthetic); they complain. She says, you're lucky I didn't leave you out there to freeze and bleed to death. You use axes in a fight? And don't expect it to hurt? Well, this is going to hurt. Remeber this the next time."

Best part? A couple of days later, they showed up with flowers (imagine the expense!) to apologise. M. said she never had any more problems from them.

7. I have a neighbor who volunteers for the Red Cross and pays
her own way to the devastated areas. My neighbor and your sister are great people doing great things. The next trip your sister takes to the Big Easy will be with you after it's all restored. You really do have to visit there; it's one of the most unusual places on earth and well worth the trip. Tell your sister thanks from all of us in the US.

10. Does she have a place to stay?
I have an extra apartment in Baton Rouge for about the next three weeks. She sounds great. Please PM me if she needs it.
