Mayor Nagin says the city will be abandoned for 2-3 months
In the NYT - http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/01/national/nationalspecial/01storm.html?hp&ex=1125633600&en=d5f10ef04f92410e&ei=5094&partner=homepage

New Orleans, a city of 500,000, mostly below sea level and reliant upon levees along the Mississippi River running south of it and Lake Pontchartrain to the north, was a nightmarish waterworld that Mr. Nagin said would have to be abandoned while the levees are repaired and the city is drained. He called for a "total evacuation," adding: "We have to. The city will not be functional for two or three months."

This is simply astounding. Where in the world, let alone America, do you have a major metropolis completely abandoned and in a hellish, watery state for months on end?

2. This is unreal
Things are falling apart here. This hurricane created destruction we've never seen and don't know how to handle.

5. Every single living structure will be condemned...or should be
even if they are still stable. Why? Mold. Just ask Ed Mcmahon.

9. and that is just the start of the health hazards. There is going to be
concentrated toxic soup on all surfaces, in the air, on the plants....for years to come. There should be independant bio-chem evals before anyone comes back in. Remember the toxic air in NY? This admin does not care for the health of it's people.

3. Though not a daily occurrence, it is likely to happen more frequently...
... as global warming progresses.

Of course, it doesn't help that most of the city is below bloody sea level?

Would it make sense to, perhaps, NOT rebuild all of the previous areas, concentrating instead on recovering just those areas w/ minimal damage and near/above sea level? And rebuild a New New Orleans in a more sustainable location?

4. In a way, it might be better to have the population out of the area.
There is going to be a lot of heavy construction and clean-up and rebuilding needed. I don't see how this could occur with the population back in the city. Seems to me, it's an opportunity to rebuild New Orleans from the ground up and maybe make it flood resistant for decades to come.

OYOH...where do 500,000 get relocated to? The logistics involved boggle my mind.

6. Great. Stop the gun toting thugs. Save the victims. Forget about
the looters for now. Then move everyone out and then police the city.

Material things come last.

8. Will they flatten the homes or let the people back in to take possessions
before they destroy them? Not much will be left in the water. But maybe something. These people didn't have a chance to get anything out. Forget furniture, books, tv. Computers can be recovered if needed. Jewelry and art objects would survive. Yes, this is tragic beyond belief.
