US won't let Canada aid hurricane victims.

<snip>
On tonight's news, CTV (Canadian TV) said that support was offered from Canada. Planes are ready to load with food and medical supplies and a system called "DART" which can provide fresh water and medical supplies is standing by. Department of Homeland Security as well as other U.S. agencies were contacted by the Canadian government requesting permission to provide help. Despite this contact, Canada has not been allowed to fly supplies and personnel to the areas hit by Katrina. So, everything here is grounded. Prime Minister Paul Martin is reportedly trying to speak to President Bush tonight or tomorrow to ask him why the U.S. federal government will not allow aid from Canada into Louisiana and Mississippi. That said, the Canadian Red Cross is reportedly allowed into the area.

Canadian agencies are saying that foreign aid is probably not being permitted into Louisiana and Mississippi because of "mass confusion" at the U.S. federal level in the wake of the storm.

<snip>

And please read through this thread - you'll see how this fits the ongoing pattern and also how very much the Bush Administration has to be held accountable for in the suffering and devastation in the South.

24. No. We're not laughing at anybody's "gross incompetence"...
...or anything else for that matter. This is a natural disaster with enormous human consequences. Fuck Bush, fuck his mismanagement (with FEMA, levee maintenance, etc.) leading into this tragedy, fuck all of that.

These folks in the Gulf states need our help. NOW. Donations in Canada are mainly going to the Red Cross and Salvation Army...hopefully, CASH going to these agencies will help get the ball rolling where it counts.

Bush...(and I'd just like to reiterate: FUCK HIM) will get his later. There's no time for his bullshit at this time; Canada views these folks as our brothers and sisters needing help. Bush is NOT in any way in this mix...

I'm saying the Peeps in charge made some bonehead decisions and now are spinning their way out....

Bush cut the budget to fix N.O. 9 months ago and now looks rather foolish. That he stayed in a vacation mode while the disaster unfolded is another moment to roll eyes. etc etc...

11. Especially from our enemies who are desperate to appease us.
"Please don't invade us. We'll give you lots of cut rate oil" -- Iran
"100000 temporary residences/shelters, please don't hurt our allies." -- Russia
"All the cheap oil and doctors you want. Please don't invade us or assassinate me." -- Venezuela/Chavez

Usually empires take these bribes.

5. Mass confusion = Bush's pride?
I mean, I can imagine him saying "We're not letting any furriners help us!" while many executive branch minions are trying to make the opposite case without getting swatted by the chimp-in-chief.

13. You got it right! Bush's pride. The people should demand he
be removed immediately. It has nothing to do with partisanship. Our Governor is a Republican- and he is doing an excellent job addressing the gas panic and price gouging in our state. Bush is just incompetent and has shown a lack of interest in his duty as President so he should be dismissed immediately. His using a middle finger at the press shows he is too immature for the job as does his vice President's profane outburst in the US Senate. Citizens as far back as the 60s, 70s, and even the 80's would have never tolerated such a President. The country was just much smarter then than it is today.

There's much more in the dKos post - you need to read it all. It's predictable - the Bushies don't want to relinquish "power" or admit that they are totally clueless.

To see how the massive damage in New Orleans and now the lack of relief of people throughout the hurricane stricken region is directly caused by the actions of the Bush Administration now and over the past years, read through this thread. It will sicken you but you need to get the whole story.

OUR National Guard is being used for cannon fodder in the Middle East while the neocons have gutted FEMA and hurricane/flooding prevention programs while setting up what is supposed to become their Pentagon-directed domestic military police force. A terrible, fascist plan with catastrophic and ongoing results.

25. Let me see if I have this straight? Canada can't help, nor can Cuba,
Venezuela, Spain, France, Germany is that about right? This is not good. We are all standing by, how can we best help and we have zero information. This is an absolute outrage.

I love you all here. Thank you again and again and again, DU'ers rock the world. I really just can't believe all this right now.

I'll check in early tomorrow and then I'm off to Crawford. I'm also having lunch in Dallas with a couple of movers and shakers, I hope. The Reverend Peter Johnson and a group of his friends, Rev. Johnson was one of the youngest volunteers in the Civil Rights movement and marched with Rev. King.
