When Walter Cronkite finished his broadcast during the Thet Offensive by giving a heart-felt editorial against the war. Shortly thereafter, LBJ went on the air himself, and said "I will not seek, nor will I accept, the nomination of my party for another four years as your president." No matter what he did during the rest of his turbulent last year in office, and no matter what Richard Nixon did during his first term, Americans would never again support involvement in a war like Viet Nam. It was the "tipping point" both for LBJ and for the war he escalated. And it now looks as though that point has been reached for Dub with Iraq, as well. x(
Too many journalists today are old enough to remember Viet Nam still, and even though their numbers include many of the media whores who have regularly genuflected to Dub & Co. the last 2 1/2 years, they now see the past eerily repeating itself in another generation. The lies, the needless death on both sides, and the site of demoralized Americans being told that they are in fact not coming home anytime soon, as their buddies are daily ambushed and killed around the corner from them. When those among our leaders are proven liars, especially about the justification for war and the scores of dead Americans resulting from that war, to quote Al Gore, "It's time for them to go."
Let's all work as hard as we can next year to keep that promise to our families, our neighbors, and our friends. And, especially, to our troops and veterans who have been so brutally betrayed.
