The floods show that our nation's infrastructure is that of a third world
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 06:45 AM by fujiyama
nation.

With a government unwilling to spend the money required to protect cities from natural disastrers, this administration has proven itself about as capable as that of Bangladesh in how it handles these disasters - except Bangladesh has an excuse. It's a dirt poor nation.

We have none.

We are supposedly the world's richest nation and we have a crumbling infrastructure. Money that should have gone to pay for it, instead is cut to pay for another criminal venture abroad and to line the pockets of those at the very top.

What we are witnessing now is a preview of the ideal laizzes faire captalist society, where no taxes are collected to pay for anything in the common good. The result is nothing more than feudalism. The poor and black in New Orleans are serfs and nothing more. They are unable to flee, trapped at the most vulnerable parts of the city.

1. Sad but largely true
I mean this disaster would have been bad either way- but didn't have to be this bad.

3. Exactly
You can't control nature, but you can mitigate its effects to atleast some extent.

After all, the Army Corp proposed money with exactly this disaster in mind. FEMA knew this would happen. It was just a matter of time. There is only so much you can do to with regard to nature, but even that little bit can go a long way.

2. No, we are 2 nations. One very nice one for the "haves and have-mores"
and a third world one for the rest of us.
