A draft of the chimpanzee genome, described by an international team of 67 scientists in today's edition of the journal Nature, offers biologists a powerful new tool to study what sets humans apart from the rest of the animal world. Comparing the chimp and human genomes could offer new insights into diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes and cancer.

At a time when some people still question evolution, the chimp genome adds compelling evidence to support the theory, scientists said yesterday at a news conference in Washington, D.C.
