Just had a horrible realization about financial situation of NO refugees.

A great many of these peope are NEVER going to be able to honor their credit obligations because of this disaster. With the new bankruptcy rules going into effect in just 30 days, what are these people to do?

There had BETTER be some special considerations for those who have had their lives literally ransacked. Is that too much to expect? In Bush's Amerika, I suspect it might be. God help these people.

1. I'll do you one better...
All of the NOLA criminal legal facilities are under water. All of the case files and evidence for all of the people being held in jail are gone.

Whhere do you go from there?

2. Just file bankruptcy now
They have until October, right?

I agree, I thought of this this morning...what about people with mortgages? Are they going to be forced to pay for the next 20-30 years for a slab of soggy submerged dirt? They won't be able to do much about it before too long. This is going to be a very real, serious mess.

Congress should be revisiting the Bankruptcy Bill NOW. NOW. Before these people start having their tomorrows ruined, too.

4. Oh, that's so yesterday!
This Congress isn't interested in revisiting their "successes". They're moving on to the repeal of the estate tax.

8. Sad But TRUE, Remember Who Contrib Campaign $ to Congress
nothing changes the fact that Congress is owned by the credit card, banking and insurance lobby -- as well as the corporate, energy and wealthy.

In their opinion, this new bankruptcy law passed just in time!

6. Maybe it would be a time to create a petition!
To get congressmen to reverse this bill! If we can force a revote on this, some of these DLC congress critters might rethink whether supporting their corporate backers would be more important this time than supporting the average voter and his potential liability, which is REALLY EXPOSED now! This would be the time to make this a national issue!

3. In the tribune..
They said only 1/3 were covered. They also said that many people thought the government would bail people out, they do not. There are $5000 loans available, but what is that going to help with? And it needs paying back.

5. Sorry, this is why the Credit Card Companies Wanted New Bankruptcy Law
They rushed this law through while they could for situations such as this --under the new law, all credit card charges 90 days prior to filing must be repaid with high interest, cannot be discharged.

Most likely the credit lines of all the credit cards held by displaced NO cardholders have been "pulled."

They don't need a reason, but for PR sakes they could say that charges outside the NO area by evacuees are being blocked as part of their fraud prevention program "to protect the cardholding customers." YEAH, RIGHT!

7. Class warfare, pure & simple.
Boosh's haves will be fine, the have nots will not.

When are the sheeple in this country going to wake up & realize that their 'man of God' is nothing but a greedy money changer who cares only for his bank account & those of his friends?

9. they'll just drop out and go underground . . .
any debts that these folks carry might just as well be written off now, cause they'll never be able to repay them . . .

11. It's worse than that.
FFI will eventually rebuild most of the destroyed homes, but it may take several years for them all to be put back up. In the meantime, the homeowners are STILL required to pay their mortgages. Without employment, they'll default on their home loans and the bank will seize the property. If the house hasn't been rebuilt yet, the bank will still get to direct its reconstruction...paid for by your tax dollars.

Some banks and lending companies are going to walk away from this with hundreds of brand new homes at little to no cost to themselves. Since those homes will be worth far more than the old ones which were destroyed, their profit will be enormous.

Of course, we tend to forget that about half the people in urban areas are renters, not homeowners. For these people, who now have no home to look forward to, no property to claim, and no job to come back to, there's really no point in returning to NO. They've lost every connection to the city that they had.

12. Think about the people who evacuated before the storm.
Yes, they are alive. But, they have no jobs, homes, money or anywhere to go. They are holed up in cheap motels all over the region. The motels will start evicting them. They will run out of food, gas and other necessities. If they have checking accounts, they may be able to get some money from ATM's if they can find one that works. Millions of lives are ruined all for the price of a four foot pile of dirt on levee #17.
