DNC: Chertoff Blames Refugees and the Dead for Their Fate
http://www.democrats.org/a/2005/09/chertoff_blames.php

Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff today:

"The critical thing was to get people out of there before the disaster," he said on NBC's Today program. "Some people chose not to obey that order. That was a mistake on their part."

Remember, there was no help available for citizens to evacuate. Perhaps Chertoff lives in a world where everyone has easy access to their own transportation, but there are a whole lot of people in the real world who don't.

UPDATE: DNC Research points us to an AP article from before the hurricane that described the plight of people who were unable to evacuate:

Making matters worse, at least 100,000 people in the city lack the transportation to get out of town. Nagin said the Superdome might be used as a shelter of last resort for people who have no cars, with city bus pick-up points around New Orleans.
"I know they're saying 'Get out of town,' but I don't have any way to get out," said Hattie Johns, 74. "If you don't have no money, you can't go."

3. Reality to Michael "Lurch" Chertoff
Most of the ppl that stayed didn't want to stay- they HAD to. No means of leaving.

The assumption that many wanted to stay was "A mistake on your part"
:argh:

4. Bastard. I saw a lot of disabled and elderly people who were unable to
evacuate, not to mention a lot of people who live in a level of poverty that Bush and his cronies are obviously too damn callous to comprehend.

9. Holy shit - Aug 1st, 2005 - LA National Guard Wants Equipment to Come Back
This article is mentioned in the comment section of the link:

http://abc26.trb.com/news/natguard08012005,0,4504131.story?coll=wgno-news-1

August 1, 2005, 9:07 PM CDT

JACKSON BARRACKS -- When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem.

"The National Guard needs that equipment back home to support the homeland security mission," said Lt. Colonel Pete Schneider with the LA National Guard.

Col. Schneider says the state has enough equipment to get by, and if Louisiana were to get hit by a major hurricane, the neighboring states of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have all agreed to help.

"As Governor Bush did for Ivan, after they were hit so many times, he just maxed all of his resources out, he reached out to Louisiana and we sent 200 national guardsmen to help support in recovery efforts," Col. Schneider said.

17. Ugh...makes it even worse
The fact that Dumbya would nominate a colorado attorney with NO security experience to head the Department of HS, and that the Senate would confirm him, shows what an absolute FARCE homeland security really is.

22. My head is spinning
We have fully gone though the looking glass. Have these people no eyes? Can't they turn on their TV and see the old and infirm laying DEAD because no one will help them or even give them a drop of water?!

Is this the genocide trial balloon? I don't want to believe it. But if our nation is going to sit idle while thousands of people die when we could be helping them, they wouldn't blink at wiping out the homosexuals, atheists, and everyone else who won't sign onto their fucked up agenda.

23. Air Flights Also Stopped Early
I think it was Governor Blanco who said the major airlines stopped flights into Armstrong Airport long before the storm arrived...fearing for the safety of their aircraft and leaving many stranded in the city with no way to get out. Many of these people ended up going back into the downtown and ended up stranded.

Someone should add this to the things that need to be investigated once the imminent disasters abate...if they ever do.

Those people in the 9th ward are just being obstructionists and disruptive. They must be Democrats trying to make the regime look bad. Those people are politicizing this and haven't proposed any alternatives.
