1. And Hoover was a good man
who made a lot of wonderful contributions outside the presidency. Chimpy is much worse.

2. Hoover was more like Carter
He was an intelligent man of principle, but his principles didn't fit what was needed at the time and he wasn't flexible. It's important to remember that Hoover didn't set the stage for the Great Depression - Harding and Coolidge did. Hoover couldn't have stopped it, but he could have done more to fix it if he'd been willing to unbend. I agree that Harding is a much better comparison with Bush.

7. No, he's not...
J. Edgar built the FBI through various means fair and foul.

Bush* never built anything more significant than a beer-bottle pyramid.

5. Kaiser Wilhelm II.
A history professor I met recently at a teach-in compared Bush to Kaiser Wilhelm II. Kaiser Bill managed to piss off every other country around him. He went to war against his own first cousin, King George VI of England in 1914. His handlers tried to keep him from speaking with the press, but didn't always succeed. In October, 1908 he gave an interview (in English, which he spoke fluently, his mother being the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria) to the Daily Telegraph which is worth reading. http://www.lib.byu.edu/~rdh/wwi/1914m/dailytel.html

He was essentially a loose cannon, who completely altered the balance of power in Europe in the early twentieth century, and started the worst war the world had ever seen up to that point.

Bush has done much the same thing. He's made enemies of former friends. He's making friends of former enemies. The real worry is that he'll somehow get some country like Pakistan start nuclear war against perhaps India.
