I believe the only folks taking things at this point are people like this. It is survival time not party time....

A New Orleans resident who did not want to be identified sits outside a Rite Aid Drug Store in the Carrollton section of town on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005. She and a group of friends had been walking for miles and stopped at the drug store to find necessities for survival. They mostly took food and hygiene supplies and were trying to make it to the Louisiana Superdome to be evacuated. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)

I'm sure a lot of people are looting survival supplies.

Here's a report from the Houston Chronicle

~snip~

Amid the turmoil Wednesday, thieves commandeered a forklift and used it to push up the storm shutters and break the glass of a Rite-Aid pharmacy. A crowd stormed the store, carrying out so much water and food that it dropped from their arms as they ran.

The street was littered with packages of ramen noodles and other items. Some outside the same Rite-Aid today were anxious to show they needed what they were taking. A gray-haired man who would not give his name pulled up his T-shirt to show a surgery scar and explained that he needs pads for incontinence.

"I'm a Christian. I feel bad going in there,'' he said. Earl Baker of Kenner carried toothpaste, tooth brushes and deodorant. "Look, I'm only getting necessities,'' he told a reporter. "All of this is personal hygiene. I ain't getting nothing to get drunk or high with.''

New Orleans' homeland security chief, Terry Ebbert, said looters were breaking into stores all over town and stealing guns. He said there are gangs of armed men moving around the city. emphasis added to show shift in story

4. at this point, i think a gun is as much a survival tool as anything...
... except perhaps water.

1. Water
2. Protection
3. Food
4. escape

in that order/

5. Exactly.
Isn't this what the Freepers are always recommending? Get a gun and protect yourself. So why are they freaking out when people in a disaster area, in the absence of any governmeny control, are doing this?

It's not looting, it's scavenging for survival.

3. Did you see the cops looting on TV yesterday?
I think it was MSNBC, in a Walmart the TV crew confronted some people who were taking stuff and they told the TV crew the cops said it was OK and that the cops were looting themselves. When the TV reporter voiced skepticism they directed him to an aisle where the TV crew found 2 cops picking out shoes, obviously looting themselves. Unreal.
