My freeper husband just slammed me because
I slammed Bush for cutting the funding for the levees and that I am always looking to blame him for everything that goes wrong.

Said I always go after people in authority and cut them all down and that they do a better job than I could in their position.

*steam releasing from my ears*

So could most of us here because we'd be doing SOMETHING! Not just looking for photo-ops with aircraft carriers! This is a national emergency, for God's sake, and Bush* only took time out from his vacation to make a speech about WWII! Too little, too late, Mr. Bush*! The situation in NO has gotten out of control while you did nothing!:grr:

Welcome to DU, LordBinkyTheBuffoon! It's great to have you with us! And you sound plenty bright to me, LOL!:hi:

38. Here's the golden bullet
If he EVER says anything like the above to you again, calmly restate what you heard, then say: "I don't like what you said. Was it meant to hurt?"

If he does not respond, or responds with more of the same: "I don't like what you said. Was it meant to hurt?"

If it keeps up, I would seriously consider whether or not remaining in the marriage was a good idea.

It's CLEAR that the money was cut to prevent this, after months/years of entreaties to fix the levees.

12. I'd be honest
I'd tell him that people have known this could be a problem for years and both Democrats and Republicans are at fault for it. Right now though it was Bush who slashed the budget for the New Orleans engineers by 44%. It was Bush who sent our National Guard over to Iraq so that the Louisiana Guard and their high water vehicles weren't in place to help. It was Bush who did nothing for the 2 days that it appeared the worst would happen, and then did nothing for 2 days after it while people were dying. There are many people to blame, but just ask him what he'd be saying if this had happened on Clinton's watch and he had just cut the funding of the New Orleans Engineers by 44% prior to the hurricane.

26. It is political
Molly Ivins said it best. This is a perfect example of how voting affects peoples lives. Yes the hurricane would have happened no matter what happened or who was in power. The point is that policies helped create this disaster. Policies keeping money from the people who were trying to protect New Orleans. Policies to not effectively evacuate the city.

Policies put in place by politicians...that were voted for.

A disaster isn't political. If the ramifcations of the disaster kill people because of bad public policy...that IS political. It MATTERS who you vote for. For some people in New Orleans it was a matter of life and death.

Death won.

20. I wish you well, but I can't offer any advice you'd want to hear
It feels like the battle lines are being drawn more than ever. I have relatives who avoid me now, and that's just going to have to be ok. There came a time to choose one path or another, and my path is diametrically opposed to theirs, and they, in my judgement, are a part of the problem.

But good luck to you and remember there's a new perspective on a different day.

and all those in like situations

communication and respect are key
if you can see that through and be that example whenever you can it can make a real difference

im not saying you dont do that but just a thought in all this that i know has made a positive impact in whatever relationships i have (family and love etc)
it takes time - oh does it take time and patience - but it really matters

76. It won't last long. He is doing the bills and since this was a very bad
week for us financially and gas prices are going up, he is going to be grumpy because he is worried. Turns into a real bear when he gets panicky over not being able to buy groceries and gas

said we should make it through the weekend.

61. And yet he'd probably not waste one second blaming Clinton
if he were still in office, even if Clinton and his Congress had fully funded the Corps of Engineers and FEMA (which they did).

I don't know how you do it, my husband's a liberal, I'd freak if he were a bushie.

85. It could be worse. And I know no marriage is perfect. If it wasn't
that it would be something else.

I will say this for him:

he's a hard worker and a good provider for the family,
has a great sense of humor,
never goes out with the boys but stays with me instead,
and helps people when he sees them in trouble.

Sadly, that last one only applies to people in front of him.. that's what makes him a freeper.. he can't extrapolate to people who are just numbers.... Cons just do not get it that way.

90. I had to check your profile to see if you live in AZ
Because your situation reminds me so much of a woman I met while canvassing for Kerry. She was a Green who was married to a wingnut. We knocked on the door and chatted with her for several minutes about the election. Very nice woman. Then her husband arrived and engaged us in a shouting match over how we should "get behind the President in a time of war". :eyes:

I guess mixed marriages are tough, huh? Hope you are feeling better

Make certain the kids are liberals and vocal about it with him. Your frustration will sink and his will skyrocket. Evens things out, dontchaknow?! ;)

101. Yes, a pastor's kid to boot. BUT, he's not too bad in that
evangelism comes hard to him, so he keeps his views to himself. And he is cool about playing D&D and listening to secular rock and so forth. I think that if it weren't for the fact that he is a pastor's kid he would be a bit different.

Then again, one of the plusses of him being a PK has been that he would rather stay home with the kids and me than go out on boys' nights. :)

100. Why in the world would you marry a freeper??
I mean, just from a sanity perspective....If my wife and I were diametrically opposed I would have left her YEARS ago...

No-one needs that sort of aggro in their personal lives...

to fit into FundyWorld at the time.

But I kept him and ditched the fundy mentality, hence the odd relationship. :)

besides, had we not married, we would not have made these guys: http://www.curvynovels.info/vacation2005/vacation2005.htm
