30. A group of my friends are getting in their school bus and driving down
south with a load of food and water. I don't know where they will end up - but they are fed up watching the rescue get fumbled up so bad. They know that 'officials' are discouraging people from just showing up but they figure those same 'officials' have fucked up so bad why should they listen to them?

I gave them a bunch of money for supplies and gas.

90. Oh the INHUMANITY! This is genocide, Neocon style, Bush Style..
I have been crying all day....I can't turn on the TV and see the images without wanting to break down between throwing things. I saw that Goebbels looking Chertoff on Larry King talking and some interview with the FEMA head literally blaming the victims who "decided" to stay in NO, and I am absolutely convinced this is LIHOP....

I hate these MOFOs...they are evil, evil bastards....they are killing our brothers and sisters....why? Because their skin is darker than ours, they are poor?

There is a place in hell for Bush and the rest of these murderers....

Meanwhile, babies and people are dying in the streets as we speak....I am beyond words...The tears and my heart are aching and I want to do something. If I had a plane and could fly it over New Orleans to drop food, water and medicine to these people that is what I would be doing. If I were the President, I'd be flying Air Force 1 over the city dropping food and water.

Instead, we have a President who could give a crap and who will take a few select photo ops tommorrow with some pre-screened people, most likely not in New Orleans.

Swamp Rat....my heart goes out to you and your family and the suffering people of New Orleans and other victims of this disaster.

I will go on the record and say it now....this, this is worse than 9/11. In the next 24-48 hours, PREVENTABLE deaths will be occurring in the TENS OF THOUSANDS! This blood will be on BUSH's HEAD!

:grr:

Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 03:06 PM by Liberty Belle
I'm a reporter in San Diego, and will publish a list of things that people here can do to help out.

FYI, I just heard that a team of our local firefighters are on the way to Biloxi to aid in search and rescue efforts. These are guys with dogs who helped at 9/11.

38. If you want international aid, the ARC has to put in a call to the ICRC
in Geneva. I read this on another DU thread a few hours ago: it seems that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) does not have to wait to be invited in by a government. But the American Red Cross (ARC) has to make the call to Geneva, and that will set the humanitarian aid "ball" rolling.

But Americans will have to put pressure on the ARC executive to make that call to Geneva. No one else can.

got my haircut and my hairdresser's last name: Jacquet. I said, "Jacquet, You don't happen to be from New Orleans?" "Yes," she said. "My family is alright, but two of my cousins in New Orleans are missing and haven't been heard from." She started crying every time we talked about it. I said, "They are alright, they just can't communicate with anyone." That's the best I could come up with.

13. Received this e-mail from a friend-1200 stranded in Tenet Hospital

There are well over a 1200 people still in the
Tenet Memorial Hospital on Napoleon in New Orleans.
Predictions are that flood waters will continue to
rise to another 9 feet tonight. Latest info is that
they have started helicoptering out people, but very
small numbers, less than 100 since 1 pm. Giving you
this update because we may have no electricity before
long. Our phone numbers are 504.897.4531 and
504.897.4530, we cannot call out. Feel free to call
us or give numbers to media to call us. They are
estimating that it may take several days to evacuate
these people - water electricity food security all
will be gone by then. Please help by notifying the
press and the government. People are hoping that
friends around the country can help out. Thanks for
giving people hope. Peace, Bill Quigley

They had about a week to shore up the levees, evacuate the poor, and prepare for disaster management. They knew all the details of the full scope of the disaster, and the official warnings were as bleak as any official warnings can be. They didn't try to do anything. Bush golfed and pretended to play guitar. Since the funding, manpower, and equipment that would normally be used for such purposes was in Iraq, trying to do something constructive would only have embarrassed them, so they just relaxed and let it happen. Needless to say, the next step will be the announcement of billions of dollars of reconstruction contracts for Halliburton and Bechtel, thus proving that Bush really does care. Disaster is another opportunity to make money, while trying to stop disaster is just a drain on public finances.

This is so unbelievably tragic.

But we're finding it hard to know where to go. Any specific ideas. One coming from VA, one from the west coast. I have a friend bring over money and goods, but we don't know for sure where to send them, aside from our local Red Cross. Is there a better place than that?

I'm so sorry for this, swamp rat. I have family in Hammond right now. They've lost one home in New Orleans and are staying there in Hammond.

For what it's worth, I will do what I can for your people. I really will. I cannot do a whole lot, but I did call my local chapter of the Red Cross here in NC and offered one of our apartments for a displaced family. The woman at the RC told me that they are not directly handling housing, yet, and directed me to the Dept of Health and Human Services. I put a call into them and I'm waiting for a reply. I hate to see a family end up in a shelter when we can handling forgoing rent for a while on this apt.

I'm heading down to the Red Cross tommorrow to volunteer. They told me that they needed people here and there. I'm considering going, but I'm not sure I can swing it with my kids in school.

I'm probably going to do that. I'll give it until tommorrow to see if DHHS has a family for me.

I'd also take in a couple of children in my home and care for them, if they need. We have our own business (real estate) and I can take time off to volunteer while my kids are in school. I feel like I must do more than donate money. (Which I will continue to do).

I've already heard back from the Red Cross and she needs people to go for 2-3 weeks. I wish I could but my daughter is 11, my son is 14 and my husband works long hours. I can go for a few days and she is checking on that for me. Otherwise, I will volunteer here in NC.

Oh, God, this is just unbelievable.

I have a feeling that our county DHHS might not get right back to me and I trust Moveon's choice of orgs. A friend, just sent me an email about this. Must be the one for me. ;) I hope I get a family soon!

I hope rescue workers are helping people gain access to the internet and assisting them in locating resources, such as this housing offer. Maybe the Red Cross is using moveon's housing list.

35. Hang in there Swamp Rat
So many of us feel for you, and we get it. If only we were in charge.

In the meantime, it seems yesterday and today that many individuals, businesses, organizations, and state and local governments from around the country are stepping up and doing things on their own, without federal leadership.

I know Indiana is sending police officers and the team with the rescue dogs (that went to NYC after 9/11) to the area (some to NO and others to Mississippi and Alabama I think). Even great satan Eli Lilly is donating something useful.

I don't know if any of that brings you comfort, but please know that so many of us care and are donating what we can to the cause.

43. swamp rat, i just begged Boxer in email
Dear Senator Boxer:

Please save the people, please make them move faster. They are dying as I type this. They are starving as I type this. They are giving there babies to complete strangers for safe keeping as I type this. They are drowning as I type this. They need a government response WORTHY of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA!

The current president just spoke and spent more than two minutes on energy and not on the immediate issue of the people who are dying. WHY? Please do something now - make them get the aid faster. I can only imagine if we had a 8.0 quake here in southern California what would be the response.

Please, I am begging!

51. I feel so bad
I am also trying to do all I can do from Florida. I have called both my Senators and Congresswomen Corrine Brown. Brown's office told me that she has been on the phone with the Gov't and other Representatives trying to get answers. They assured me that she will scream from the rafters to get the help that NO needs. If you have ever seen her I am sure that is what she is doing.

Simply heartbreaking to see so many in need & such lack of response. I never in my life thought I'd see our government turn it's back on it's own people. I hope millions wake up to what our government has become -- a government of, by & for the rich people.

Hugs to you Swamp Rat & to all the unfortunate people living through this nightmare, my heart goes out to you all.

Go here to learn about making and sending buckets:

http://www.methodistrelief.org/site/pp.asp?c=bhKNI4PHIpE&b=876335

The month of September was going to be dedicated to raising money for Sudan relief at my church but I'm going to talk to our outreach committee to see what we can do. We have a missions trip going on in Mexico right now as well. I'm definitely going to send in something on my own, even if I don't get folks helping me right away.

And we are praying, Swamp Rat....we are crying out to God with a broken heart. :grouphug: The God I serve is a God of mercy.

But can we get into the area? I cannot stand watching people starve to death on the news!!!

68. You know you got me, man
You got me a long time ago.

My skill set does not match up particularly well with the immediate rescue and recovery phase -- not to mention that I'm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean -- however once we move forward (Denny Hastert notwithstanding :grr: ) to the rebuilding phase, y'all might find that my, shall we say, unusual way of looking at things (autism/Asperger's), combined with my intimate (if somewhat dated) familiarity with the area, might well prove useful.

P.s. I am presently attempting to contact disability advocates in the region; one in Baton Rouge says he will find out from his chapters down there what needs to be done, and I haven't heard back from the guy in Charlote who grew up in Metairie and carries a Saints cellphone (when he dropped it, I cracked, "Works just like the real thing! :-) )

84. I cannot begin to imagine what you're going through!
I don't have any friends or family in NO, but this disaster is utterly breaking my heart. I am so broken up about this ... but I cannot begin to imagine the terror and grief you're going through right now.

It's very frustrating to feel so helpless. I've donated to the Red Cross and a couple of animal shelters. I've called members of Congress. But that's all I can do for now.

Please let us know when you find out anything about your dogs -- I love animals so much, and their plight is making me very sad as well.

When I called Congressman Cardin's office today, I told the lady who answered the phone that hearings must be held to trace the events that led to this disaster. People should be held accountable, starting at the top. Enough is enough!

Even the e-mails are starting to hit our representatives and Senators.

Money. Prayers. Calls to politicians. Many people are loading up the family car, filling it with $4/gallon gas, and trying to drive down there, sight unseen.

I'm happy to hear that you made it out, and especially that your mother did.

Stay well, and give our love and support to your family, too.
