House Speaker: Rebuilding N.O. doesn't make sense
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 03:47 PM by slutticus
Haven't seen this on DU yet....

I'm so fucking pissed right now I can't take it...

Cutting disaster preparedness funding ...and now this?!?! Do they WANT New Orleans gone????

Thursday, 2:55 p.m.

By Bill Walsh
Washington bureau

WASHINGTON - House Speaker Dennis Hastert dropped a bombshell on flood-ravaged New Orleans on Thursday by suggesting that it isn’t sensible to rebuild the city.

"It doesn't make sense to me," Hastert told the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago in editions published today. "And it's a question that certainly we should ask."

<snip>

“That’s like saying we should shut down Los Angeles because it’s built in an earthquake zone,” former Sen. John Breaux, D-La., said. “Or like saying that after the Great Chicago fire of 1871, the U.S. government should have just abandoned the city.”

<snip>

"We help replace, we help relieve disaster," Hastert said. "But I think federal insurance and everything that goes along with it... we ought to take a second look at that."

3. My Take Is That This Is A Calculated Decision That Was Made 5 Years Ago
Bushco did not intend spend money to protect the city from near-certain destruction, and they have no intention of rebuilding it, except for the petroleum facilities.

9. I think you are correct.
At least Hastert isn't trying to hide the true GOP agenda.

8. Ex-New Orleanian KamaAina: Hastert Doesn't Make Sense
That rat's-ass piece of garbage doesn't seem to mind pouring billions down the toilet in Iraq. Why should he give a flying fsck about rebuilding N.O.?!

The irony is that, but for a sex scandal, the speaker would be -- Bob Livingston, from Metairie. You certainly wouldn't have heard such tripe from Livingston.

27. Welfare for the rich
I read yesterday about one of the barrier island beach communities of vacation homes that was just about totally washed away. No question about the lunacy of rebuilding there.

There is a certain absurdity of building a city below sea level, next to the sea though.

17. Sorry, but I have to agree.
If someone came up with a scheme to build a city below sea-level on the gulf coast in the path of hurricanes, he'd rightfully be called a fool.

Rebuilding is asking for another disaster down the road.

And it's not evironmentally smart, either.

Not construction. This tendency has been getting worse ever since Reagan, and this is the ultimate expression of it.
