I've never asked for DU help before.... I have a Friend who just lost
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 06:18 PM by Tom Yossarian Joad
everything in New Orleans and has transplanted her family in Northern Alabama.

Their bank was destroyed, home was looted and set fire, and they have lost everything and are trying to get up and running.

No money, My family and I will handle that, but we need to try and help her find a job in or close to Marshall County AL. She's an RN who works in Ortho, Neurosurgery and Clinical.

If anyone has contacts or is in a position to help her get work in this area please PM me or respond to this thread.

There are two kids involved, they have little more than the clothes on their backs.

Please help me help them and help keep this thread kicked so maybe the right person will see it who can help with a job.

PLEASE!!!!!

On edit: Just got off the phone and the one good side to it is that the school system has already got her kids enrolled, a local banker is doing backflips trying to confirm bank records, and workman's comp has been very kind as well.

But we still need to try and help if we can.

6. First thing she needs to do is contact the AL State Board of Nursing
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 06:03 PM by Horse with no Name
She needs to do this immediately. Neither Alabama nor Louisiana are what they call "compact states".
She will have to see if they will grant reciprocity.
If they will grant reciprocity, then she can go to work immediately.
Otherwise it might be weeks.
:(

Edit: My suggestion for her if they will not grant immediate reciprocity is to perhaps find a hospital in Louisiana--such as Shreveport--and see if she can work a couple shifts on the weekends utilizing the "Baylor Plan"--which allows you to work 12 hours on Sat and 12 hours on Sunday and receive full-time bene's and have the rest of the week off.
That would be a short term solution.

9. Aren't there RN positions open everywhere? I heard they even get signing
bonuses which would really help in her case.

Of course, this could be a more popular method in large cities. I don't know about small towns.

she won't have any trouble finding a good paying job. She's lucky
Tell her we're happy for her. She'll set up to start a successful new life...many othes aren't as prepared and lucky as she.

Here is a search I just did on a nursing jobs website.

http://nurse-recruiter.com/cgi-bin/view_ads.cgi

Three jobs in Alabama for an RN. As she is an RN, she shouldn't have much trouble finding something.

Go to the nursing recruiter sites.

Good luck.

44. Exactly. I'm Going to be haunting local yard sales for clothes and other
mailable items for adults and children. All I will need is sizes and an address that will get them there.

The yard sale season around here in Eastern MA will be over in just afew more weeks, and it would be a shame to miss the opportunity to get clothes and other essentials for people who need them.

21. She WILL get help
It takes time. And I think she can start the paper work on-line. Check out the FEMA web site for information. Some times they can get a check right away. Some times it takes awhile. Things have to be verified, etc. I'm sure you understand that.

Also, go to the Welfare office RIGHT NOW. She qualifys. I know you said money isn't an issue. But if SOME $$$ is lifed off your shoulders right away, it will make her feel better. The usual qalifications don't apply right now.

She would also be elgible for Clothes, etc..

It seems harsh, but these agencys are going to be swamped with paperwork dealing with everyone. The sooner you can get her listed, the sooner she can get the help.

If she owned a home or had renters insurance, contact that insurance company right away. Even if they can't check out how bad the home is, etc... She can request an ALE check to live on.

Thanks for helping her get a job. The quicker she can get a "noraml" life, the easier it will be to deal with this. Her life will still be shaky... something about it will feel normal. And help her put one foot in front of another.....

31. That's over 2 hrs. away. There are several AL DUers in that area though.
You should definitely go post this in the Alabama state forum. Also look on the thread, "AL Duers check in here" because that will give you the location of a lot of DUers in AL. I'm sure they wouldn't mind a direct contact. Everyone in our state forum seems very nice.

I have heard that they really need nurses so hopefully she will not have much trouble.

Sorry I am not more help.

52. Kaiser is flying in nurses from the East Coast and paying all expenses
for them if they agree to work here at least 3 months. We know this because some of the best care my wife received when she was in the hospital in San Rafael for 18 days in April with acute pancreatitis was from temp nurses, one of whom was flown in from North Carolina. They seem to be working mainly on pediatric floors and on floors for internal medicine patients with illnesses that don't require constant monitoring.
