1. Thank you very much!!!!!
It is literally INSANE.

I know what it's about. Everyone is stunned and horrified by what we have seen and the lack of help getting to these poor people. That frustration and horror we all feel is being channeled into some pretty bizarre fixations though. Some of them make me truly ashamed at the level of compassion shown by my fellow Democrats.

2. I think that their main fundraising targets are business and their
buddies with loads of cash - so more power to them. If they just donated all of their tax breaks over the last four years, that's a lot of cash.

3. The traffic is very high on the DU right now. There may be more
than one freeper here to plane "lack of empathy" bombs. So that the freepers themselves don't have to take stock of who they are and what they accomplish on a day like today..which is to teach hate.

Don't know but I would aggressively correct anyone who is asking really stupid - lack of compassion questions. And plant your disagreement right there.

6. In our defense. . .
Bush follows Olansky, Olansky believes that having the gov't helping people is evil (basically) and only religious people, who get morals from religion, can help the poor and needy.

that is why Bush has cut all the programs that help people.

Now they want to turn it over to us. Cut taxes for the wealthy, push the tax burden to the poor and middle class. When something like this happens, the gov't should tell the middle class and poor to help themselves.

It is a dilemma for me. I want to help but if we do, don't we prove Bush right? What we needed was $14B for a new levee in NO 8 years ago. Private people can't do that. Only the gov't can do it. I'm more conflicted that some of you.

5. You know, I am not attacking them for their
fundraiser, but, when does Bush take responsibility, he is just appearing to be in control, by calling in the EX presidents to take up the cause for him. I hope to God they raise millions, billions, for these poor people, but I will not ever approve of Clinton covering Bush's ass by saying that no one could have known what was going to happen. Why do we have to approve of his ass kissing, when we know what a joke it is. Why do we have to agree with Clinton, just because he a Demo? I can't and I won't. I am for the American people, not a political party. They are not standing for us, why stand for them?

8. Charity is wonderful but they can't do it by themselves. They need
strong government emergency programs as a structure. If charity could carry the load, then we wouldn't have all the famine and woes that we see in Africa.

The fund raising is great, hooray. But wtf do the folks in Charity hospital and the superdome and convention center need right now? Yesterday? Food and Water!!! EVACUATION! They Need it Now. Bush and co. should be concentrating on saving more lives now not money and gas prices. Babies and elderly died today from dehydration!

The focus on the fundraising could wait until these desperate people are saved. I am sure Americans are outraged at the needless deaths of innocent Americans on their tvs.

And clinton is now a repuke.

11. In tears, THANK YOU
I am here to tell you that Louisiana will take help from anyone, from anywhere, any help at all...Please, the situation is desperate here, in N.O., in St. Bernard, in Raceland, in Slidell, in Port Sulfur, in Grand Isle, Pointe a la Hache, in Barataria, in Jean Lafitte in a hundred communities that you haven't heard of on TV.

We will accept help from:

Evangelicals, RWers, Fundies, GWB, his daddy, Bill & Hillary, Fox News anchors, KKK Rove, Judith Miller, the Washington Times, peoples of all color, nationalities, religions, lack of religions....ANYONE.

I hate GWB as much as any one person on DU, but we need help down here from all sources...please don't harrass these sources of help.

As one person in LA, I really appreciate your post, and the other posters who agreed.

12. who is discouraging charity work?
I mentioned to you in another thread that there's nothing wrong with charity. But there is something wrong with former heads of state WHORING for the current head of state in order to get people to give money so that the government doesn't have to pay for it, like they rightly should. Remember those gigantic tax cuts? Remember that half-trillion dollar war? Time for the government to suck it up and pay the piper.
