My dream ticket: Clark-Biden 2004
It will probably be Clark-Edwards, but talk about a total clobbering the right would take in that matchup (Clark-Biden). Biden gives Clark the credible Washington insider who is well-respected by both parties and who can GET THINGS DONE. Great deal-maker to have in the White House. Here's my toast to Clark-Biden 2004!!

1. Biden's support of the RAVE act
sickened me. He is an ardent drug warrior and I really, really don't want him on the ticket.

what about my right to put whatever I want in my own body, as long as I am harming no one else? there is no constitutional authority for the rave act.

or are the non-substance related paraphenalia can also can get the owner jailed/fined.

You are using the same logic that middle Amerika uses justifying the Patriot Act. That is I am a (white american/parent) so it doesn't bother me that the (patriot act/ rave act) is unconstitutional.

42. i third that notion-, and further...
i think these attitudes are really the plague of the democratic party- i thought liberals were supposed to be tolerant of the way other people choose to live thier lives- the rave act, bills against smoking in BARS, and ever-lowering blood alcohol legislation (i could compete in the olympics or ace the MCATs at .08%!!) are all being pushed by the left. not too liberal in my book...

44. Some of those can be justified on public health/safety reasons
However most if not all drug policy is illogical and counter productive.

Liberals never win issues because fear is a louder voice than reason, until Amerika is much more educated don't expect things to change.

48. good point- fear is definately louder than reason...
and i think we ought to be a lot more logical about accepting risks vs. benefits in this country (and a good time IS a benefit) i would be willing to bet that a mom driving her minivan and yelling at her kids or messing with the radio is much more of a threat than me driving after three beers.so are we going to ban children and radios too? what about drive-thru's- i bet there are some shocking statistics out there on hamburger-induced accidents.... all i am saying is that a balance must be struck between safety and personal freedoms, and right now i think it is our freedoms that are getting the short end of the stick..

But this board doesn't represent the majority of voters. :) IMO that ticket has alot of potential as far as appealing to those in the middle/independents.

11. That would "clobber the right"? Think again.
talk about a total clobbering the right would take in that matchup (Clark-Biden).

It's not the right which would get clobbered; it would be the left. Sorry, but that match-up would be a win-win for the right. The left would be out in the cold. Again.

35. we all know he's weak on civil liberties...
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 07:31 PM by arcos
"The RAVE Act was an attempt by legislators to reduce the illegal use of MDMA (ecstasy) and other drugs by broadly expanding Section 416(a) of the Controlled Substance Act (21 U.S.C. 856(a)), also known as "crack house" statute. Rather than going after drug users or drug dealers, this legislation targeted music promoters, venue managers and land owners. Punishing innocent businessmen and women for the crimes of their customers is unprecedented in U.S. history. The federal government can't even keep drugs out of prisons, yet they seek to incarcerate business owners for failing to keep people from sneaking drugs onto their premises. The legislation also added a civil liability clause of $250,000+ to the existing criminal penalties of up to 20 years imprisonment and possible $500,000 fine.

Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE, sponsor) and Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA, co-sponsor) introduced the RAVE Act on June 18, 2002 (Biden's intro, Grassley's intro). Later, Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), and Strom Thurmond (R-SC) added their names as co-sponsors.

Senator Patrick Leahy and Senator Richard Durbin were also co-sponsors, but withdrew their support and removed their names as co-sponsors."

I like Biden, but he is one of the dems most dependent on corporate funding, and he's been shown to vote accordingly.

Combined with Clark, there simply isn't enough representation of non-corporate citizens on that ticket.

40. Biden invented the "Drug Czar", mixed on NAFTA, bipartisan foreign policy
http://biden.senate.gov/bio.html

A strong leader on anti-crime and drug policy, Senator Biden has been instrumental in crafting virtually every major piece of crime legislation over the last decade, including the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, also known as the Biden Crime Law, which dramatically increased funds spent on law enforcement. Additionally, Senator Biden is the author of the landmark Violence Against Women Act of 2000 (VAWA 2000) which contains a broad array of ground-breaking measures to combat domestic violence and provides billions of dollars in federal funds to address gender-based crimes. Biden, who serves as Chairman of the International Narcotics Control Caucus, also wrote the law creating the nation's "Drug Czar" who oversees and coordinates national drug control policy. Today, Senator Biden continues to work to stop the spread of new drugs such as Ecstacy, Ketamine and Rohypnol, the "date rape" drug.

As the Ranking Member of the Foreign Relations Committee, Biden is the Democratic party's chief spokesman on national security and foreign policy issues. Senator Richard Lugar, who currently chairs the Foreign Relations Committee, said: "Senator Biden has a very strong commitment to a bipartisan foreign policy and serves as a good example for everyone in Congress. He has a very broad, comprehensive view of the world. He's a good listener, but he's also a strong and effective advocate of his position."

Two okay-looking NAFTA votes, one with Kerry:
