Robert Baer on "Buchanan and Press".
Robert Baer just said that he heard that it was Scooter Libby and the Vice-President that cooked up the leaked story and took it to the President. Just on now (6:53PM). This is sure news to me, although I haven't been here all day.

11. No, Baer wasn't on yesterday.
And the guy that was on yesterday didn't name the VP. Baer did.

24. That was today!
and he did name Cheney and Scooter!

On the Paula Zahn show, Joe Klein also named Cheney's office as being the source of the leak.

This is big and getting bigger!

9. Ex CIA officer
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 06:12 PM by Monkey see Monkey Do
worked mid-East terrorism in the eighties & spent part of the nineties in northern Iraq until Chalabi claimed he was plotting with Iranians to assassinate Saddam (which is an extremely short version of a long long story).

Wrote a biography - "See No Evil", and worked with Daniel Pearl for a while on the Pakistan link to al-Qaeda. Has written a second book "Sleeping with the Devil" on Saudi Arabia.

He's often on radio/TV over here (UK) & is a very impressive speaker who knows his subject & I would assume is plugged very much into Langley. Has been very critical of the way the "war on terrorism" has been very politicised & is a strong advocate for increased human intelligence. Mel Goodman (an ex CIA analyst) commented yesterday about how "Baer couldn't be intimidated", referring to his frequent broadsides about the Bush administration's use & abuse of intelligence.

14. So, do these men like Johnson and Baer take their "best guesses"
to the authorities, or do we just hope and pray that the FBI is smart enough to find these things out for themselves?

16. I'm sure....
they still have connections, and you gotta wonder if things will be 'slipped' to the FBI?

17. My guess (& this really is a guess)
is that the CIA is using retired officers who have a media profile & will be called upon as "experts" to discuss the leak. That is, Baer, Johnson & whoever else are repeating a line originating from the CIA.

I don't think these two men (& I haven't heard Baer on this topic - only Johnson) would both specifically hint (& name in Baer's case) Libby unless they were pretty sure of what they were saying (ie better than an educated guess).

The hope is that the Washington press corps will be smart enough to start looking into Cheney/Libby's role in the Iraq war build up, the "White House Iraq Group" and Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz's "Office of Special Plans" and so forth.

In the same way that "Watergate" was about FAR more than a simple break-in I'm sure that "The Wilson Affair" is a potential key to an ocean of dirty tricks and scandals-in-waiting.

How the US sold it's soul for Saudi crude...

He has written several other books and is connected to the CIA, but I do not know his exact role.

5. Then, in regards to the two staffers that called six journalists...
he said the staffers could have come from the National Security Office. Pat grilled him, and he stuck to his opinions. Amazing!

7. Larry Johnson suggested the same thing yesterday
on B&P. Buchanan was trying to figure out who it might have been, based on his experiences in the White House. Johnson, a former CIA agent who was in the same covert training class as Valerie Plame, said he knew who had done it. Buchanan explained his thinking & how he got to Libby and Johnson said, "You'd be on the right track." Johnson appeared Monday night on The Newshour in one of the most damning segments I've seen yet, including his quote: "I'm ashamed to be a Republican."
