Rotten To The Corps (Shocking ! )
This will make you very, very angry...
=====================================================================

<snip>
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is mighty proud of its $100 million water project in Erbil, in the Kurdish area of northern Iraq. But that's just one of its thousands of reconstruction projects in Iraq.

In contrast, the entire 2005 construction budget for all Corps of Engineers projects in its New Orleans District was $94.3 million.

You don't have to wade very deep into Corps of Engineers documents to see the Pentagon's outrageous diversion of funds for rebuilding Iraqi facilities damaged by our bombing — at the expense of desperately needed projects right here in America.

On August 31, the very day that Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast, the new issue of the Corps of Engineers' Gulf Region Division (GRD) magazine, Essayons Forward, came out, celebrating billions of dollars' worth of reconstruction work.

nightmare end? Have people lost all decency? All sense of humanity? I don't get it.

3. This is par for the course.
Our taxes, and taxes that our grandchildren will eventually have to pay, are being put into Iraq, and in most cases, being looted out of sheer mismanagement of funds.

5. Funds diverted to Iraq and Alaska--pork in AK but Iraq too?
Isn't that forbidden meat? Anyway, according to Maureen Dowd's column in the NY Times on Saturday, some obscure Alaskan lake is getting a $231 million bridge built to it. It's nowhere near any big towns or cities. I guess the caribou vote with the elephants.

18. More on the Corps
The elected officials in our town have tried to get the Corps to help us with drainage, as our flat area floods frequently. They said that their funds have been drastically cut by this administration. They didn't exactly put it this way, but the meaning was clear: You're just not important enough.
