I am so proud right now, my 8 yr old daughter just

walked out here with her piggy bank (which she has been begging me to take her to the store so she could buy a toy) and it had a note taped to it, "money for the homeless people". It is her entire piggy bank. I am going to try to find a local Salvation Army or Red Cross office where we can take it and drop it off (after I match it, of course).

My 17 year old gave me $50 today, it was all her income for the month of August. We sent it to Second Harvest.

She had already decided to give when she heard the school was having a fundraiser, but she told me, "That's going to take too lont, they need this now."

It feels good, doesn't it, to have raised a child who lives with empathy, compassion, and generosity.

not only recognized the need, but also the immediacy of it.

raising that child........you should be proud of yourself as well! Complements!!!

I'd be willing to drive. Since she is only 8 I want her to "see" the money going to someone else, as she doesn't understand the whole credit card thing yet...

It is difficult reading all of these things, so much so that even the lovely DUers who I love and respect have not kept me from losing a lot of faith in humanity. Your daughter just restored my faith. What a lovely, giving child. Let me know and I will make a matching donation as well.

As suggested above, we will be making a trip to the local office of Habitat for Humanity. It was 34 dollars and 67 cents, (when you are 8 you know exactly what is in your piggy bank, to the penny) Thanks for your offer to match and your very kind words, which I will show her tomorrow along with the rest of the comments. Her action and that of other kids, like Wellstone Dem's daughter and the kids with the lemonade stand has made me feel better too. It is good to know that they get it.

to you, seriously. I will bookmark and send a check on Tuesday and I will send it with a note about your daughter. It will be a wonderful story for them. Hug her tight and tell her thank you.

She came out here and I read her the replies, she went to bed with a big smile on her face, but with tears in her eyes for the people. I guess I didn't realize how much attention she had been paying to all this.

I hope that they are there tomorrow, since I had to be somewhere and couldn't stop. If not, I may take some money by their house anyway. They had drawn a big red cross on a piece of cardboard.

Now here's the thing - these kids live just a few blocks from Senator Liddy Dole's brother. If Liddy Dole pushes the estate tax repeal next week with the rest of the Republicans, then charities such as the Red Cross stand to lose as much as $25 million per year since many wealthy patrons choose to leave their inheritance to foundations or charities because of the tax benefits. If there are no incentives to do this, the charities stand to lose lots and lots of money. That's a lot of lemonade sales for these kids.
