US Northern Command - As Directed By The President

Let me just pull this out, if we should wonder why this help wasn’t there sooner, “As directed by the President”
UPDATE (Sept. 3, 2005, 4 p.m.)
PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – As directed by the Secretary of Defense and in accordance with the National Response Plan, U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) is supporting the Dept. of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
USNORTHCOM is providing and/or coordinating the following support:
New
• As directed by the President, lead elements of the 82nd Airborne Division moved from North Carolina to New Orleans International Airport. Approximately 200 personnel and associated unit equipment will arrive on six military aircraft during the evening. About 2500 additional troops from the unit will arrive in the area Sunday.
• 1600 members of the 1st Cavalry Division are en route by bus from Ft. Hood, Texas, to Hammond, Louisiana.
• Marines from the First and Second Marine Expeditionary Forces are scheduled to begin movement to the Gulf Coast Sunday.
• By Monday, within 48 hours of the President’s announcement, DoD expects to have over 15,230 personnel in the joint operating area. This is in addition to the more than 22,000 National Guard personnel already in place.
• In the last 24 hours, 40 military airlift missions transported a total of 383 short tons of cargo to the affected areas.
