What does a Chief Justice do?
How much more power does a Chief Justice have than an Associate Justice?

I know they swear in the President, that's merely ceremonial. What else?

3. Powers of the Chief Justice...
Presides at impeachment trials
Decides, if he's in the majority, who writes the decisions.
Appoints judges to special courts, including the secret terrorism courts that approve certain types of surveillance.
President of the Smithsonian Institution.
Controls the judiciary's budget and operations.

I'm sure there's more, but those are what I can think of.

4. Also
presides over Presidential impeachment trials in the Senate.

Gonna be a long fall, folks. Does this qualify as "extraordinary circumstances" to justify a filibuster?

15. Our "extraordinary circumstance" is Katrina
Now is NOT the time for the Senate to be discussing a long-term appointment. Right now we have thousands of dying people to tend to. And * is doing nothing about it.

Yeah, I'd say we have more than enough reason to filibuster.

5. It's mostly just all ceremonial stuff
They don't really have much more power than the other 8 on the court. That's why I don't really care if Scalia ends up as Chief Justice. Who replaces Rehnquist is far more important.

12. Au contraire, the person does have a lot of power
when in the majority, the chief justice decided who writes the majority opinion for the court which in effect decided who writes the law for the land. CJ also leads discussions on cases and can have a great impact with this too. Read The Bretheren for more on the impact of these powers.

8. From Wikipedia:

- If the Chief Justice is in the majority on a Supreme Court case, he or she may decide to write the Opinion of the Court, or may assign it to an associate justice of his or her choice.
- Presides when the Senate tries impeachments of the President of the United States
- Presides over the impeachment trial of the Vice President if the Vice President is serving as Acting President (not a Constitutional responsibility but a rule of the Senate).
- Officiates at the inauguration of the President of the United States. This is a traditional, not a constitutional, responsibility of the Chief Justice. All federal and state judges, as well as notaries public, are empowered by law to administer oaths and affirmations.
- Serves as the Chancellor of the Smithsonian Institution.
- Serves as the head of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the chief administrative body of the U.S. federal courts. The Judicial Conference is empowered by the Rules Enabling Act to promulgate rules to ensure the smooth operation of the federal courts. Major portions of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence have been adopted by most state legislatures and are considered canonical by American law schools.

10. They appointed our present President and it wasn't even their
jurisdiction to do so. Rehnquist is part of the reason we are in this fix now.
