Anne Rice in NY Times - great rant
Oh, help is coming, New Orleans was told. We are a rich country. Congress is acting. Someone will come to stop the looting and care for the refugees.

And it's true: eventually, help did come. But how many times did Gov. Kathleen Blanco have to say that the situation was desperate? How many times did Mayor Ray Nagin have to call for aid? Why did America ask a city cherished by millions and excoriated by some, but ignored by no one, to fight for its own life for so long? That's my question.

But to my country I want to say this: During this crisis you failed us. You looked down on us; you dismissed our victims; you dismissed us. You want our Jazz Fest, you want our Mardi Gras, you want our cooking and our music. Then when you saw us in real trouble, when you saw a tiny minority preying on the weak among us, you called us "Sin City," and turned your backs.

Well, we are a lot more than all that. And though we may seem the most exotic, the most atmospheric and, at times, the most downtrodden part of this land, we are still part of it. We are Americans. We are you.

2. I'm presently reading one of her books. Good for her writing this.
I hope more NO celebrities go on record to expose the disgrace that was done to NO and it's residents. This is news the neo-cons can't quash, no matter how hard Rove tries.

19. Anne Rice doesn't live in New Orleans
In fact, she hasn't lived in New Orleans for most of her life. She was there as a kid, then during the 90's until her husband's recent death.

I'm glad she has done this, since she has such a large fan base, and the more people who are made aware of what has happened, the better. I'm sure she's as mad as can be, because she does love the town very much.

6. That's the damned truth. I couldn't believe some of the coverage-
especially on Fox. All "looters, looters, looters, they deserve it, they're stupid for not leaving, etc.". It was disgusting. Our idiot government certainly failed New Orleans- and so did alot of our people.

great article and thanks, proud2Blib for posting it.

Damn sick of some folks using a video of some poor woman taking Pampers and using it to justify why help was so slow in coming. DAmn.

13. Now their is a Rice we can ALL be proud of.
I'm glad to here that she is okay. Maybe she will look into her magic mirror and speak to George Bush. I wouldn't do it in person. His breath is dark and noxious. A post Armageddon interview with an Anti Christ. The final battle. Was it worth it?

14. If you've read any of her books
It's obvious how much she loves New Orleans. The city is a full-fledged character in her stories. From her descriptions of it, I felt like I knew the place pretty well before I ever set foot there. She's royally pissed about this.

Oh and she is definitely a Dem. I was down there in the fall of 1995, and walked past her house in the Garden District. There was a big Clinton/Gore sign on her front door.

16. This is Bullshit!
Blame the Go*damn government not your fellow Americans. It's bush and company that fucked this up, not America. Anne Rice is doing nothing but creating a distraction that will divert attention away from bush. This is not helping!!!!

20. Not a great rant.
In fact, it's dead wrong.

Last time I checked there were hundreds if not thousands of volunteers helping people out in shelters.

Last time I checked there were hundreds if not thousands of individuals opening their homes to refugees.

Last time I checked, there were millions of dollars pouring into various charities across the nation.

This does not sound like a country that turned its back on New Orleans.

If Anne Rice wants to complain about the lack of response, fine. But direct it properly, at the unprepared governments. Don't slander your fellow people who opened their hearts, homes and wallets. Anne Rice is an author, she knows the power of words. She should chose them more carefully. Until she does, I will not waste my time reading anything she has to say.

22. Not according to the fundies, it ain't
Apparently, God took out New Orleans because of the 10 abortion clinics, Mardi Gras and Southern Decadence--the annual Labor Day weekend meeting of gays in NOLA.

23. SHE'S ALLOWED TO MISS THE MARK IN HER GRIEF -
Many, many US citizens have cared deeply about the people of NOLA and MISS and ALA -- but the government ABANDONED them entirely, the Red Cross did not go into NOLA. Many must feel that even God abandoned them this week.

GRIEF makes people INSANE - as in lacking rationality, as in flailing wildly about them, and, at times, striking out with anger at anything and anyone who comes close to them -

DO NOT expect people suffering from this tragedy to make distinctions about who did and did not abandon them - if you can't cope with being in the presence of people experiencing suffocating grief - then go sit in a closet for a year or two.

:grr:
