Players say Rush's Comments off base
PHILADELPHIA -- Some NFL players were still upset Thursday at last weekend's comments about Donovan McNabb that caused conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh to resign from ESPN.

On "Sunday NFL Countdown," Limbaugh said the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

"You can have your opinion, but there are certain things that are sensitive that you have to adhere to and certain lines that you don't cross," Carolina Panthers quarterback Rodney Peete said. "And I think he definitely crossed that line with that particular comment."

As one of McNabb's closest friends, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Kevin Johnson offered another view.

"He's disappointed," said Johnson, a teammate of McNabb's at Syracuse. "He has done everything right as a player. He's been a perfect role model. He has done everything that you would ask him to do as an NFL quarterback."

Limbaugh resigned from the show Wednesday night.

If you read more there are comments by Jesse Jackson, Steve McNair, Bill Parcells, Steve Spurrier, and Lavar Arrington.

1. This is what Arrington said
"Who's Rush Limbaugh to make a statement like that?" "He needs to stay in his area of expertise because clearly he's out it. That's one of the most asinine comments a person can make. It shows his IQ level in football."

3. Exactly!
If the media's so gung-ho to create heroes out of black quarterbacks, where are the commercials and prime-time profiles for Quincy Carter, David Garrard, Cleo Lemon, etc.? And

I will grant Limbaugh this, Donovan McNabb isn't as great as some in the sports media would have you believe, but he's still damn good. The reason he gets great press is because he wins games and is the kind of guy you want your kids to be like.

4. He also went to Three pro bowls in 4 years
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 08:37 AM by VermontDem2004
went to two straight NFC Championship games and was runner up to league MVP two years ago. Don't grant Limpballz shit, he was way off base with that comment. Not many qb's have done all of that in their first four years.

Edit: I was wrong, 3 Pro Bowls

He went to 5 pro bowls in his first 5 years, and led Miami to the Super Bowl in his second season and was also League MVP in his second season.

5. Any casual fan of the NFL knows
that NO ONE starts unless they are helping the team win. Winning is really the only thing that matters, and therefore no way is a team going to start an inferior QB over a superior one simply because of skin color. Sure, this happened in the past - when white QBs were preferred. But that's not today's NFL.

6. It's time that Cinncy benches Jon Kitna
and starts Carson Palmer.

9. They did that with Akili
He wasn't ready for NFL action. It ruined what might have been an impressive NFL career. But the fans (and coaches) were desperate, looking for a "spark". Most of the greats had to take a year or two riding the bench, listening to playcalls, etc. before they got in the game.

10. My friend knew Akili Smith
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 08:46 AM by VermontDem2004
They both grew up with each other in San Diego, he went to Oregon right? But Cinncinatti can go 2-14 again with Jon Kitna as the starter or go 2-14 with Carson Palmer as the starter. With rookies like Kyle Boller and Leftwich starting on other teams, Palmer should go out there and see what he can do.

edit:Plus Akili's career isn't over, remember Gannon didn't become the player that he was till his 9th season in the NFL.
