MSNBC just aired one of the many horrifying stories
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 01:21 AM by Greylyn58
that are coming out about this disaster. This poor woman didn't make it out of NO and she stayed(w/her 2 kids) in their home. As the waters rose, she and her two children and the family dog climbed into the rafters of the house. She broke a hole in the roof and they all climbed out. She had two sons, one who looked like he was around 18 and the other one was only 2 years old.

They were finally rescued and dropped off where she thought they would be getting on a bus. As she was climbing on, she handed her 2 year old off to someone on the bus. Somehow she was pushed back and the bus door was shut in her face and she ended up back in the crowd. The bus drove off with her 2 year old son.

The reporter hearing her story grabbed a nearby National Guardsman and told him what had happened. He in turn grabbed a state patrol office who took her, the dog and her other son in his car to where the bus was going.

He said he wants to know if she finds her son. So far they haven't heard if she has.

God, I can't take more of this. These people are being treated like animals.

7. I have the cultivated emotional discipline that comes from years of...
newspaper reporting, and I have been on the brink of tears since yesterday. This story pushed me over the edge -- all the more so because I'm a dog lover, and people are forced to abandon their dogs in order to get on the buses. (It isn't clear, but the dogs are then apparently shot or otherwise euthanized by the National Guard or some other authority.)

And don't think people (especially children) aren't horribly traumatized by such episodes: I was forcibly parted from a beloved dog at age five -- 60 years ago -- and I will carry the hurt to my grave.

The point of which is that the material loss suffered by the people of New Orleans is only the beginning. The psychological loss will be of a magnitude never before seen in the United States, and -- as usual -- the Bush Administration (with its bottomless hostility to functional social safety nets) will make a great Rove/Norquist/Goebbels PR production out of compassion but will in fact do absolutely nothing.

We live in the nation that proudly and even smugly proclaims itself the crown jewel of capitalism. Yet our institutionalized indifference to psychological well-being reveals the unspeakable savagery that is the true heart of capitalism -- especially when it is compared to the genuine concern reflected by the Cuban policy of evacuating not just people but all their animals as well: pets most assuredly included.

Once again, we are shown how -- in the great United States -- "care" is merely a four-letter word for something you have to buy. And if you're too poor to pay for it, you don't get it.

9. They were reunited
if this is the woman with the little kid named "Blaze". I heard that a family member heard the story on the news and went to the Astrodome and located the baby, the network helped the mother and her other son and the dog get a ride out of NO and are back with the baby.
