Poll question: Which radio group do to you listen to?
I am so happy I live where there is a Pacifica radio station KPFT.

NPR has secretly been taken over by the right, in case you haven't noticed. Sure, it sounds peaceful, and to the extent that 'liberal' means 'rational' I guess that could be true. But ever since Newt Gingrich attacked them so many years ago (and did they get taken over by a former Radio Free Europe head?), they haven't been the same. They are an evil tool of the rightwingers, albeit in a more subtle way.

NPR's puff piece the other day on the California election pointed the way for the future of political debate: they did a story on 'voice removal technologies', and played the breathing -- no words -- of Davis, Arnie, Bustamante, Huffington.. They took out the words! Yes, you too can make a voting decision based on whether a candidate says 'hmmm-uh-uh-uh-uh-hmmm' or 'uh-uh-uh-uh' or simply does 'heavy breathing' between words (Arianna).

3. WBAI -- 99.5 FM NYC (Pacifica)!
Thank goodness I have a Pacifica station in my area. :bounce:

I also enjoy independent stations for music -- we have a great indy station in the NYC area, Fordham University radio 90.7 WFUV. They play Beth Orton, Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, and countless other great artists who aren't featured on Clear Channel.

Another good one when I lived further upstate in NY was WDST out of Woodstock -- 100.1 FM.

4. Over the air...
The only radio stations I listen to are NPR, Pacifica WFUV http://www.wfuv.org/ and WFMU http://www.wfmu.org/ in the New York City area. Those are all non-commercial stations. All of the commercial stations, frankly, suck.

Over the internet there are tons of great stations to listen to. I listen to the various BBC stations, mostly BBC 6,http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/ which is a great station for music. And KEXP from Seattle http://kexp.org/ also an excellent station for music.

I also listen sometimes to Randi Rhodes and the ieamerica radio network people on the internet too.

8. You're totally correct about NYC commercial radio!
It all completely, totally sucks. My wife and I have "debates" over this all the time, because she listens to Z-100 and KTU -- and both of them absolutely make my skin crawl. Not only do I not like pop and dance music, but they play the same f***ing songs over and over and over again!

WFUV definitely rocks for music!

14. No, toddler duty interfered..
but I wanted to go. And KPFT IS great. It pushes my horizons and the programs themselves reflect such diversity and a sense of community.

6. my radio is permanently locked on c-span
i dont know which one that would fall under.

i really do not like the dc pacifica station. the talk is few and far inbetween and the "jazz" that they play doesnt do anything for me. and there are no other alternative/progressive music programs on it. occasionally you might get some hip-hop but thats it.

10. Community Radio Lives
Out here is Western Colorado we have a station, KVNF, that was the first small market community station to bring NPR along with a wide variety of music and local programming to our area. Along with NPR news we now carry Pacifica programming, with Amy Goodman on 4 nights a week. It can be found at www.kvnf.org.
I hear the rage against NPR frequently and I admit they have lost the cutting edge they once used to expose inhumanities in South Africa and Central America. They are still the ONLY source of cultural, scientific, and medical information anywhere. They have retained the human element in broadcasting in spite of their propensity to pass on the beltway spin on national issues.
Fortunately for us, a wellspring of sources has become avalable on the internet, supplimenting the needed input of information we need to make our informed decisions on these national issues.
I, for one, find the cultural and humanistic information provided by NPR to be of moreand more value as I come to realize that in these times we need ART as much as we need TRUTH.

15. Very well put and you are right..
I listen to NPR during the rare times that KPFT has on something I don't like..and though the 'beltway spin' bothers me, I do defintely appreciate the culture, science news etc. that they bring.

12. It varies
My radio here in Minneapolis is set to the following stations:

WCAL 89.3: an all-classical station out of St. Olaf College in Northfield, about 50 miles south of here

KFAI 90.3: an eclectic community radio station that carries Pacifica news and info programs, plays American roots music in the morning, and world music in the afternoon

KNOW 91.1: the NPR news station

KSJN 99.5: the NPR music station, mostly classical, but also The Morning Program with eclectic music and corny humor during drive time, and some jazz on weekends.

16. Another Pacifica Fan
I also listen to WBAI in NYC, although I sneak over to WCBS AM from time to time during baseball season, and 1010 WINS for the weather. But for listening, it's WBAI.

The NPR public radio stations in NYC have totally sold out to corporate interests; they feature as many "WNYC is supported by..." announcements as other stations have ads.

Community radio is not as slick, and the phones break and equipment jams, but it retains the certain intimacy of a human being at a microphone speaking to other human beings living in a certain area. I like that.

20. KEXP - 90.3 Seattle
www.kexp.org It's the best station I have ever listened to, and I consider myself lucky that it's a local station. They have a great streaming website, for those of you not in western Washington.

I totally agree that NPR has slowly moved to the right. It pisses me off that people consider it liberal, because its not. They are usually rational, and I prefer to get my morning news updates from them rather than the TV. But I turn it off as soon as I hear some right-pandering piece from Juan Williams or others like him.

21. I almost never listen to radio anymore because I can't get a

decent station most of the time. I felt sad watching the PBS show about the blues in Memphis the other night, because I lived in Memphis when I was in high school and listened to great music on WDIA (famed all-black station).

This country needs good radio!
