Survivors of Katrina, First Victims of New Bankruptcy Bill
Adding insult to injury. My local paper had a piece on this. They will not have much time to file before the new law kicks in. I am sure at this point nobody there is even thinking about this, but the paper asked will there be the time to address this in Congress? Can we trust the creditors to be "compassionate"? I guess none of the idiots in Congress who passed this horrible bill foresaw a situation like Katrina.

1. Landrieu should be ashamed
All the dems that voted for that piece of shit legislation should be ashamed.

2. John Conyers and some other Dems
in the House will be introducing a relief bill in the House on this. Sheila Jackson Lee had proposed this as part of that POS legislation, and it was voted down along party lines.

Those of us with Repug reps need to burn the phone lines. I can't find any more specific info at the moment, but it will probably be available after Tuesday when they're back in session.

3. Conyers, et al are working on this
Rep Conyers (no surprise there) along with several others is poised to introduce a bill on Tuesday. Will exempt victims of disasters from many of the provisions of the bankruptcy act. They had tried, with no repub support, to amend the original to provide this protection. Hopefully the cold reality of Katrina will get this through.

4. That's the idea
They will now be in virtual indentured serrvitude for the rest of their lives.

This is really a trifecta for Bush cronies. They get to profit from the gast shortage caused by the hurricane. They'll get to develop prime real estate in New Orleans, and they'll get indentured servants.

5. Federal relief monies will go to creditors
Sheila Jackson Lee introduced an amendment that provided exemptions in the case of natural disasters, but it was voted down along party lines.

I'll say it again, because it's so twisted -- relief monies, our taxes specifically purposed for catastrophic aid, can be claimed by creditors after mid-October.
