"thousands" of babies passed up the line to get on the bus
It can't possibly be thousands, but it could be a helluva lot. From Army Times, describing the evacuation of the Superdome:

Air Force Capt. John Pollard of the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Security Squadron has spent nearly a day-and-a-half straight with a microphone, trying to keep the masses informed and prevent them from crushing people in the front. He said he’s seen thousands of babies be handed up from the rear of the crowd to the front in an effort to get the babies on the buses.

Also:

Sgt. 1st Class Ron Dixon recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan with the Oklahoma National Guard’s 1345th Transportation Company. He said the biggest difference he sees is that the people in Afghanistan wanted to help themselves, while many of the evacuees just want others to help them.

1. Someone got a fax about babies because the cable channels
have been showing them every five minutes. Feel good! Babies!

As to the second comment, apparently the people of Afghanistan haven't learned helplessness yet.

2. It's pretty damned hard to help yourself under the

conditions they have been living with in NO. Afghanistan is a rough place, to be sure, but since he just came from there, he's seen the Afghanis in fairly normal conditions, not in a time when they've been bombed, etc.

The guy's an idiot to compare two vastly different situations. Or he's a racist. Or both.

4. He should have seen Kabul under nine feet of water
before making such a comparision.

3. well, perhaps if they hadn't had FOOD AND WATER FOR 5 DAYS
they'd be more willing to help others.

Kind of hard to much for others when you're weak, sick, and dying.
