Another LIE debunked: The NOPD did NOT have cops walking off the job!
Right now on CNN

Most of the bullshit rumors floated during the disaster were LIES designed to make Nagin and Blanco look bad!

1. You know I wondered about that
Granted the officers were in the same position as the citizens, lost homes, lost families, but this is a police force that was used to dealing with large, rowdy, crowds.

Lies, Lies, and more damned lies.

9. Who is telling that lie?
The Superintendent of th NOPD just debunked the SHIT out of the lie.

Said some were told to leave to take care of their families and were later recalled, but NOBODY walked off the job.

37. The Chief of the State Police?
To make matters worse, the chief of the Louisiana State Police said he heard of numerous instances of New Orleans police officers _ many of whom from flooded areas _ turning in their badges.

"They indicated that they had lost everything and didn't feel that it was worth them going back to take fire from looters and losing their lives," Col. Henry Whitehorn said.

16. NYTimes article

W. J. Riley, the assistant superintendent of police, said there were about 1,200 officers on duty on Saturday. He said the department was not sure how many officers had decided to abandon their posts and how many simply could not get to work.

Mr. Riley said some of the officers who left the force "couldn't handle the pressure" and were "certainly not the people we need in this department."

He said, "The others are not here because they lost a spouse, or their family or their home was destroyed."

These are quotes so probably accurate

4. Lie being perpetrated on Bernie Ward right now
I went to the link at the top of the Discussion Groups page, and Bernie wasn't on-instead, someone named Abbott. He was making the usual RW talking points about it being locals fault, and cited the NOPD as an example. In other words, he was blaming the whole debacle on the cops and the mayor. I shut it off in disgust.

How can they possibly know this for a fact? It isn't possible.

Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 08:42 AM by Solly Mack
Or asking if those claiming officers walked off their job would know?

I'm gonna have to go with the Police Chief who said he had accountability of all his people.

27. I took it as the latter; that those claiming the "walkoffs" would have
no way of knowing.

Until it's proven beyond any shred of doubt, I'm calling it CYA bullshit by the Feds, perpetrated by the Heritage Foundation.

Note how quickly it has spread over the various interviews...

29. How can anyone know?
Someone posted here yesterday that 40 Starbucks employees are missing. Did they walk off their jobs? Did they drown? Did they evacuate the area?

I would assume a police officer would make every effort to contact the Police Chief, but there must be a lot of scenarios where they were unable to.

Yep, Blanco and Nagin are both 100% responsible for the fact that the cops did NOT desert.

Bush is responsible for thousands upon thouosands of poor black people dying, though.

23. Well, that's really so 1950's. Really. Clue: FEMA
FEMA's sole reason for existence is for dealing with federal disasters even smaller than this. This is a federal disaster. It was even declared as such last weekend, before Katrina showed how to give Smirky-boy a blow job.

You really have no shame, do you?
Just stop a minute and reflect on how you're behaving. Reflect on George W. Bush's actions in that glitzy resort Monday and Tuesday, cutting up cake and strumming a guitar while thousands of our citizens were dying. Wrap your head around that. Not as a partisan, but as a human being and a citizen.

31. All of the rescues, all of the officials you saw in the first 72 hours,
were LOCAL police, LOCAL guardsmen, LOCAL officials.....they were overwhelmed and thought that the feds would be there any minute. After all, they had been promised that, hadn't they? Hadn't Blanco reported that to them? Hadn't the feds promised that to Blanco?

In case you don't know, our Lt. Governor, Mitch Landrieu (Mary's little brother) was in the boats for 3 days, rescuing people. He waded thru the nasty water and collapsed on the pier, sleeping. Then he got up and went out again.
