Mary Landrieu on ABC. "NOW, George!"
This is heartbreaking. She was in a helicopter touring the area with George S. She was describing the heroism of the sherriff and she said she would punch anyone, including the President, who had the nerve to criticize the sherriff's heroism.

Then she broke down in tears when talking about the President's photo-op at a spot where the levee had been breached. There was one lone crane working. She said the President promised help, but there was just one lone crane down there.

This is UNACCEPTABLE! My G-d. We really have turned into a third world country and just seeing that footage makes me realize, this is no incompetence. This is deliberate. Mary tried to play it safe, to go along with Bush in order to secure the essential assistance her state needed. I see that now. But the gloves are off. It's obvious she, Nagin, and Blanco will do whatever is necessary to help their people.

1. At this point they NEED to be ruthless
to get the people what they need. Would the repugs feel any differently if it were a Dem administration in charge? No-the GOP howls with fury at the slightest misstep, now we should do the same. If we don't, more will die.

2. Now I feel bad
I had called her office to ask why she was praising the president.
While I think she was naive to expect that showing respect for the office would make shame him into doing his job, I guess I can't blame her for trying.

I'm ashamed of myself now for doing that.

14. Actually hurtful though it was , you may have done her a kindness.
Anderson Cooper started it and she saw and LEARNED that people wanted her to speak on behalf of them. You may have helped her turn from an average so-so Senator into a potential great one. We all need somebody who cares enough to kick our ass when its needed in a crisis. She did the one thing that BUSH cannot - she learned and then acted! Bless her, and may she continue on behalf of the people. Louisiana has a deeply changed senator who really understands now the meaning of choices between lfe and death.

18. I agree. She's had an epiphany, realized how wrong she'd been and changed.
It takes a very big person to do that. I, for one, hope she keeps it up. She's not only done a complete about-face, but she's become quite brilliant at getting her point across. Staring into the face of evil can do that to a person. Or make them run away. Fortunately, that's not the case here. Junior is discovering many people who are suddenly standing up and speaking out on his depravity.

3. Yeah, I've been on and on about her CNN appearance.
She had to praise George Bush's response, and Anderson Cooper laid into her for it, but she felt she had to kiss ass to get any help at all.

It seems her approach was flawed though. The way to get the President to help is apparently to accuse him of racism and incompetence.

Now we know.

11. Yes, she has.
And honestly, if I were in her position, I'd probably kiss ass too if I thought I could save the lives of my constituents. She's finally realized that Bush doesn't give a damn. So has Blanco (as evidence by her bringing in the former FEMA director under Clinton).

I have a sneaking suspicion that Ray Nagin's rant lit a fire under their feet.

5. She just roasted him on TV
Thank god for her doing that. They are now trying (natch) to spin this away:

It's the fault of the people for staying there.

It's the fault of NO for being established where it was.

It's all the local politician's fault for (insert reason here).

It's god's fault for hurricanes. :eyes:

I am SO GLAD she showed that solitary crane, sitting idly.

7. She was great
She clearly said and showed how this disaster is going to affect the rest of the nation. It's scary.

Did you see the FedEx facility that serves all of Louisiana and Mississippi? It's underwater, sitting in the middle of a lake, with at least forty marooned semi trucks parked around it.

There were long lines of freight trains, sitting on tracks that are now underwater.

The downtown area of New Orleans - my god. It's a huge city, and it is DESTROYED.

She talked about what will be found when they open up the houses that are sitting underwater. How many people will be found? It's unimaginable. From the pictures, it looks like there is not one salvageable building in St. Bernard parish.

17. Words weren't really needed. The horror was in the images themselves.
And what I thought she CLEARLY articulated was that the needs of the region were presented to the President NUMEROUS times and he hasn't lifted his finger to do a damn thing.

13. I was hoping she would hold them accountable.
It's about humanity! WTF? Why is that so difficult for some people to grasp? I feel dirty inside and out because of what I have witnessed this past week. Feel like I need to scape the scum off of myself...but a part of my heart and soul will be forever tarnished. It has been one of the most horrific atrocities I have ever witnessed.

16. Her initial praising of the * was a mistake
It should have been obvious to anyone that this crowd will be as cruel and careless as it is allowed to be. If Iraq did not teach us that, what did it teach us? If Mary thought that praising the chimp would get help for her state, she was wrong. I am happy that she realizes that now. The interview with Anderson Cooper was so painful to witness. It seemed that she either hadn't seen what he'd been witnessing or was in shock. Now that she's seen it, I expect her to fight this "administration" like a tigress or turn in her Dem credentials.

30. But it is NOT obvious to "everyone". My partner lets me know that
every moment I rant and rave about these repuke criminals.

People still cannot grasp the idea that these REPUKES are totally and wholely bankrupt morally and corrupt phisically. The are ALL criminals and souless. WE know that. But many cannot grasp the very idea that these bums can be so INTENTIONALLY CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT - from Halliburton's Profiteering and Favoritism to increase the wealth of Cheney at the expense of everyone else, to the CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE during 911 and first to the stolen elections of 2000.

They just can't bring themselves to believe that anybody could be so schemeing and heartless and crimnal - UNTIL THEY PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED IT FOR THEMSELVES!

We should be thankful for the many who are finally taking off their blinders and washing the sleepers from their eyes!

19. You know why Landrieu suddenly found a backbone? I'll tell you.
Because she suddenly realized that, no matter how how much DLC-style ass kissing she did for Bush, SHE was going to be the scapegoat.

She was saying "it's too early to place blame" and thanking Bill Frist just hours before the Republican smear machine got underway and started laying all of Bush's failures on HER doorstep.

I'm glad she's taken a more aggressive stance, no matter how she arrived at it- but for her it's a matter of political survival, I expect.

28. Absolutely ... she's been as guilty on the "nothin' but a photo-op" charge
as anyone, up to this point. And she's been so far up Bush's behind for so many months, I thought she'd become a Repug.

But I'm glad she said what she said in that helicopter. Better late than never to stand up for the poor people of her state.

AND -- she made an important point about how important New Orleans is to the rest of the country (as a port, distribution hub, oil refining area, etc.)

BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN! And to top it off, a democrat woman!!

And to this administration, Woman are 2nd rate citizens. Just look at the way they treat their wives.

If Bill Frist or Coburn or anyone of the male pigs in the senate was the senator of N.O., you could be assurred that N.O. would have gotten the help that it needed years ago.

Bush made a big deal during his photo-op visit that Sen. Lott had lost his home yet he never mentioned that Mary had lost hers.

I started cheering when she said something to the effect that if Bush did nothing but come down for a photo-op, she might just have to "punch him out"!!
