3. I bawled like a baby - here's the transcript

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9179790/
MR. RUSSERT: And we are back.

Jefferson Parish President Broussard, let me start with you. You just heard the director of Homeland Security's explanation of what has happened this last week. What is your reaction?

MR. AARON BROUSSARD: We have been abandoned by our own country. Hurricane Katrina will go down in history as one of the worst storms ever to hit an American coast, but the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina will go down as one of the worst abandonments of Americans on American soil ever in U.S. history. I am personally asking our bipartisan congressional delegation here in Louisiana to immediately begin congressional hearings to find out just what happened here. Why did it happen? Who needs to be fired? And believe me, they need to be fired right away, because we still have weeks to go in this tragedy. We have months to go. We have years to go. And whoever is at the top of this totem pole, that totem pole needs to be chain-sawed off and we've got to start with some new leadership.

It's not just Katrina that caused all these deaths in New Orleans here. Bureaucracy has committed murder here in the greater New Orleans area, and bureaucracy has to stand trial before Congress now. It's so obvious. FEMA needs more congressional funding. It needs more presidential support. It needs to be a Cabinet-level director. It needs to be an independent agency that will be able to fulfill its mission to work in partnership with state and local governments around America. FEMA needs to be empowered to do the things it was created to do. It needs to come somewhere, like New Orleans, with all of its force immediately, without red tape, without bureaucracy, act immediately with common sense and leadership, and save lives. Forget about the property. We can rebuild the property. It's got to be able to come in and save lives.

We need strong leadership at the top of America right now in order to accomplish this and to-- reconstructing FEMA.

MR. RUSSERT: Mr. Broussard, let me ask--I want to ask--should...

MR. BROUSSARD: You know, just some quick examples...

MR. RUSSERT: Hold on. Hold on, sir. Shouldn't the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of New Orleans bear some responsibility? Couldn't they have been much more forceful, much more effective and much more organized in evacuating the area?

MR. BROUSSARD: Sir, they were told like me, every single day, "The cavalry's coming," on a federal level, "The cavalry's coming, the cavalry's coming, the cavalry's coming." I have just begun to hear the hoofs of the cavalry. The cavalry's still not here yet, but I've begun to hear the hoofs, and we're almost a week out.

Let me give you just three quick examples. We had Wal-Mart deliver three trucks of water, trailer trucks of water. FEMA turned them back. They said we didn't need them. This was a week ago. FEMA--we had 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on a Coast Guard vessel docked in my parish. The Coast Guard said, "Come get the fuel right away." When we got there with our trucks, they got a word. "FEMA says don't give you the fuel." Yesterday--yesterday--FEMA comes in and cuts all of our emergency communication lines. They cut them without notice. Our sheriff, Harry Lee, goes back in, he reconnects the line. He posts armed guards on our line and says, "No one is getting near these lines." Sheriff Harry Lee said that if America--American government would have responded like Wal-Mart has responded, we wouldn't be in this crisis.

But I want to thank Governor Blanco for all she's done and all her leadership. She sent in the National Guard. I just repaired a breach on my side of the 17th Street canal that the secretary didn't foresee, a 300-foot breach. I just completed it yesterday with convoys of National Guard and local parish workers and levee board people. It took us two and a half days working 24/7. I just closed it.

MR. RUSSERT: All right.

MR. BROUSSARD: I'm telling you most importantly I want to thank my public employees...

MR. RUSSERT: All right.

MR. BROUSSARD: ...that have worked 24/7. They're burned out, the doctors, the nurses. And I want to give you one last story and I'll shut up and let you tell me whatever you want to tell me. The guy who runs this building I'm in, emergency management, he's responsible for everything. His mother was trapped in St. Bernard nursing home and every day she called him and said, "Are you coming, son? Is somebody coming?" And he said, "Yeah, Mama, somebody's coming to get you. Somebody's coming to get you on Tuesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Wednesday. Somebody's coming to get you on Thursday. Somebody's coming to get you on Friday." And she drowned Friday night. She drowned Friday night.

MR. RUSSERT: Mr. President...

MR. BROUSSARD: Nobody's coming to get us. Nobody's coming to get us. The secretary has promised. Everybody's promised. They've had press conferences. I'm sick of the press conferences. For God sakes, shut up and send us somebody.

MR. RUSSERT: Just take a pause, Mr. President. While you gather yourself in your very emotional times, I understand, let me go to Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi.

Those who missed it should try to watch it. I don't think Bushies are going to be able to shut folks up like they've done for years. There are going to be more people speaking up in an official capacity who know that FEMA stopped aid from coming to people

FEMA cutting communication lines...and this official rebuilding their own levee while NO sits with one crane which isn't operating to fix their levee when Bush lied about the repair work.

Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 11:32 AM by ecoflame
Men often criticize women for crying...they don't want to cry because it displays weakness...blah, blah, blah..blah...blah..

I rarely burst out crying. Many times I am so ferociously livid I cry.

I have seen more grown men cry on television this week I'm almost ecstatic because if nothing else, it will demonstrate the utter helplessness felt. On CNN, interviewing people (adults) about how to get in contact with them, it's primarily been the men who have broken down. It's not a criticism, just an observation.

49. This piece of video is one of the most powerful indictment of Bush and his
minions that I have seen. That interview sent chills throughout my body. I've been on the verge of hysterics this whole week.

That FEMA director should be fired immediately. He is evidently not qualified to be in the position that he is. I've heard of his prior job as the director of some horse organization. How in the world does that qualify him as the head of THE national disaster preparedness/emergency management agency? Any local fire department chief would be more qualified than that. As the days go on, he's looking more and more like a "deer in the headlights" look. Ineffecutual idiot.

Just another one of Bush's buddies who received a job, not because of their qualifications, but because of their loyalty to the BFEE.

71. FEMA DIRECTOR SHOULD BE IMPRISONED!!!!

The Director of FEMA as well as Michael Chertoff should be indicted and tossed in jail on reckless homicide charges. They were ACTIVELY preventing aid from reaching the city. They were ACTIVELY preventing the levees from being repaired before the city had flooded.

Bush needs to be IMPEACHED!!!!

Democrats need to grow a fucking spine and make the 2006 election into a "recall by impeachment" election against Bush. Force all those Republicans fuckers to defend the Bush administrations CRIMINAL behavior!!!! Because all the Republicans will do is be a rubber stamp to this murderer!!!

59. I know President Broussard.
He is a rock. He is usually imperturbable. He's dealt with some very trying and tragic situations in his time as Jefferson Parish President.

For him to break like that ...

The desperation that those who ARE trying to help in New Orleans and the surrounding area has got to be enough to drive them mad.

64. I' mad as hell about all this FEMASHIT...I hope to high heaven
the rest of America gets mad with the rest of us here. I hope and pray they start paying attention and waking up. They have got to stop trusting the government and the media.....

Why Gods Name is FEMA cutting communication lines? Why in Gods name are they "turning around" or stopping all forms of help? Why in God's name was jefferson Parrish not allowed by FEMA TO USE THE FUEL?

If there is a reason that makes sense to anybody out there in DU land, please explain it to me.

From where I sit......and I can't believe I'm thinking this.....they want people to die....so they will have fewer people to care for.

Why should I be surprised?.....they are behind 911 too....

Bama

65. I can't understand any of this. It makes no sense.
What would be the motive for FEMA to do this? What could they hope to accomplish by cutting communication lines and turning back supplies of water and fuel?

It is the most disturbing, bizzare thing I have ever heard in my life.

72. They're trying to bring the locals to their knees ...
... they are trying to bring the governor and mayor to their knees so that they will sign capitulate and make New Orleans a federal zone under Bush's martial law. Afterwards, they will simply blame EVERYTHING on the locals when it was Bush's homeland security department that was actively TRYING to finish what the hurricane had started.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bush's thugs went out in the middle of the night and blew those levees themselves.

74. there is specific HISTORY of dynamiting levees (directing floodwaters)
and of shooting anyone on sight who might be doing something to levees (hey, what does this say about those "mysterious" shooting incidents involving "contractors"?)

James Carville wrote all this history in 1997, in salon:

67. I cry every time I see him
This is an absolute tragedy! (Understatement, I know.)

I thought that Haley Barbour appearing just after this man broke down was an opportunity to see how slick Barbour is. It was so obvious. He is one slick slimy dude and if Bush stopped short, Haley would be covered in shit up to his elbows.

God help the people of Jefferson Parish.
