Showing a Coast Guard Pickup of two young guys on a roof with a little dog. The poor thing is walking around wanting to be picked up. They have taken one guy up into the heli. I don't know if I dare watch the end. What if they take the next guy and leave that poor little dog on the roof?

I have seen too many dogs being left behind and tied up to porches surrounded by water.

I did read from their web site they should finally be getting in today!

They will not want "outsiders" roaming around trying to round up animals.. they will shoot the strays:cry:

The people who had to evacuate will never be able to claim those pets anyway..


People with pets should always skedaddle BEFORE a storm, even if they have to sleep in the car:(

I would have a terrible time, but we acutally talked about how we would do it.. We have the "kitty gitmo" crate, and some heavy duty computer boxes, and two pet carriers.. We would have some very unhappy pets, but we would lie to a hotel clerk, and max out a credit card before we would leave the babies to fend for themselves:cry:

We would do the same. We have 4 cats and a dog. I would pack them all in the van with the kids I don't care the cost.

But we have to remember how many of these folks could not leave. :(

the people in NOLA have RELATIVES in LA..in places NOT affected by the storm.. Why not transport them AND their pets to a safer place outside NOLA, and let them use a goddamned PHONE to call family to come and get them..or pay for a lousy bus ticket to where the family is..

They are using a howitzer , where a flyswatter would be more appropriate (I am not minimizing the tragedy..just the govt approach to it)

Had that been done, they would probably be staying with friends and family and their pet in some other place in LA..away from NOLA..and not "tagged" and boarded in yet another stdium..hundreds of miles away from their support system

I love petfinders. That is how we adopted our dog! I am still not sure they have made it into NO yet though. They were promised but you know how that goes.

Also, bestfriends.org has a special Hurricane Katrina section and you can volunteer to foster or adopt animals rescued.

I think those who lost pets need some comfort that their pets are being cared for.

9:10 A.M. -- The Jefferson Parish animal shelter said it has rescued over 100 animals from evacuees at Interstate 10 and Causeway Boulevard. The shelter issues an urgent appeal for national pet and veterinarian organizations to bring trucks to the animal shelter in Tylertown, Miss., and take animals away to places where they can be cared for.

I'd refuse to go if it were me & my dog & they didn't let me take her.

Non-dog lovers think that is insane, but I couldn't live my life knowing I had abandoned my beloved doggie baby, anymore than I could after abandoning a human member of my family. Better dead than live a life of that kind of guilt and pain, I think... Sadly, this is what is being forced on these poor people who have lost everything. They also have to live their life with regret and guilt over those humans and animals left behind. It is the ultimate in cruelty.

Hasn't anyone noticed there's only one media camera feed on Fox, MSNBC, and CNN right now? Is there a total media control in place?

I am guessing they are limiting news to one pool reporter. I would like to think it is because of so many aircraft in the sky. But I do have darker ideas why.

I know you're awake. And Xultar, I'm not talking about traffic choppers and news choppers. I'm talking rescue choppers. If this is the largest arilift in U.S. history you'd think that wide shot would show ops everywhere.

We can only hope there are some independents running around on the ground with digital cameras etc....

No other choppers. I know it's a widespread area, but where the hell are the boats? These neighborhoods have many people still in them. In houses, garages and attics they can't get out of. Where are the urban rescue crews? The scuba divers? Hell we have them here in Florida diving in the murkiest croc-filled ponds just to retrieve golf balls.
But I'll ask again, where are the boats?
I keep seeing the same carefully managed news stories about people not wanting to leave home (maybe because they have no idea what is going on), and shots from the airport, etc.
Managed news is not what we need right now. For Chrissakes, I feel that if Geraldo and others hadn't been screaming for help the people would still be at the convention center and Thunderdome.

scooped up the dogs along with the people when they could (and obviously they couldn't in every case). But, sadly, some of these pets were rescued only to be foreceably left behind when the owners were not allowed to bring them on the buses. I am so heartbroken about this. It compounds the human misery to such a tremendous degree.

I understand that some MI and AL evacuation centers have allowed dogs. It has kept everyone calmer, happier, and not caused problems. For the life of me, to force these dogs to be left behind is compounding the trauma on these poor people (and all of us watching) to such a tremendous degree. It is as unexcuseable as letting people die. It didn't need (and doesn't still need) to happen.

My own Ausssie/Lab doggie girl is probably going to start running from me now--I seem to be needing to reach out and hug her constantly....!
(Actually dogs know when their beloved "owners" are in pain.. In actuallity my own little gir has stayed close to me all week when I have been home. THat only underscores what a comfort these dogs could be for all those traumatized people)

and I respect that, but to me a minute used to save a housecat that could have been used to save a kid is a minute too many. I'm not trying to pick a fight here and I am not saying I am right, just that I have a different point of view when it comes to this.
