The Front Page of today's Atlanta Journal & Constitution
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 04:01 PM by BooScout
This took up most of the entire front page of today's AJC. It's an Editorial. I cannot remember ever seeing an editorial on the front page like this. They only do news on the front page...never editorials.

"EDITORIAL: The rescue operation mounted in the wake of last week's hurricane was characteristic of a third-rate country, not the world's only superpower.

Shame on the public officials who reacted slowly to the cries for help from New Orleans. Shame on the criminals wandering the streets, preying on the poor and helpless. Shame on those who didn't heed the warnings about the vulnerability of New Orleans.

Shame on all of us.

The people of New Orleans, many of them lacking the wherewithal to evacuate on their own, were left stranded without enough food or water to survive. For days, their pitiful pleas largely went unanswered.

By midweek, bodies began piling up at the Louisiana Superdome, while bloated corpses were seen floating down still-flooded city streets."

2. A lot of J&C subscribers are suburban bushites
Maybe this really will wake a few of them up. I kind of doubt it, but maybe the high gas prices will capture their attention long enough for them to take a passing interest in the idiot they keep voting back into office.

4. Maybe the realized that if an F5 tornado bears down on them....
they might get the same "help" as the coast is getting.

14. "It's as if you've disappeared as a human being."
The headline of the second story is chilling. I heard a woman interviewed on the news who said something to that effect, commenting on the troops coming into New Orleans and pointing guns at law-abiding citizens whose only "crime" was that they hadn't had food or water for days.

I don't recognize the America I grew up in.

6. Notice they balked at naming bush though.........
just a catchall "bureaucrats" admonishment. When they get to the real source of the problem then we'll have cause to celebrate their enlightenment.

9. that was my first reaction
-- it's actually quite wishy-washy and even tries to make the reader feel guilty for the problem.

16. A lot of Atlantans vacation on the Gulf, especially Florida panhandle
A lot of white suburban Atlantans may realize that this hit pretty close to home, actually.
