FEMA cutting phone lines in Jefferson Parish why? Swamp Rat
I got this from Swamp Rat

He's responding to my don't forget me, I have offered to help his family if they need it

SR's reply

won't... so many people are PMing me and I am struggling to put things in order here... food, place to stay, bills... I am OK right now. Please help the folks still in Orleans Parish.. My brother just heard JP Sheriff Harry Lee say that his deputies caught FEMA agents trying to cut the phone lines in Jefferson Parish.

Why would they do that?

Why?

I was afraid that this topic would get lost.

23. If this happened, FEMA did it at the feds' orders. Remember, Bush is
blackmailing Gov Blanco and probably the other two governors to sign over their state powers to his federal control and allow federal military troops to take over EVERYTHING, including the national Guard. Martial law. They are obviously refusing to start real aid until they get what they REALLY want - further power and suspension of more constitutional protections against dictatorship.

If they are cutting the lines, it's to deliberately make the situation worse and put on more pressure to cave to federal martial law. Isolating the people, cutting off all real reports of what is REALLY going on, will heighten the fear and make it easer to push their talking points about "rampaging looters" - they WANT more fear, anger, and class/racial tension.

I want to see confirmation of this story - if accurate and more general, it is a deadly sign of what is going on. It's a power struggle, and the neocons are using this dreadful tragedy like another 9/11.

Like General Tommy Franks said, "one more hit" and they can suspend the Constitution. They think this is their chance.

I recommend this Dec 2003 article written in response to Franks' doomsday words. It's all excellent, but this is the prescient paragraph that puts this in perspective:

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/12/07/Columns/From_Tommy_Franks__a_.shtml

It was the Nine Years' War in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World that facilitated the seizure of power by the world reformers who then took control of nearly all human and social development. In 1984, George Orwell described Oceania as in a constant state of war with a changeable enemy who "always represented absolute evil." These inventors of the great dystopias understood the way governments use war and its associative fear and instability to consolidate power. Despotism thrives on insecurity. Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs puts safety right behind food, water and sleep. Humans naturally crave stability and are willing to sacrifice values such as liberty in its pursuit.

66. Yeah is there a good thread on that?
First cops fire on people with guns killing give.

Then it's cops firing on New Orleans Engineers, killing five of them.

Then it's some guy taking a shot at the Engineers, and the cops then shot him and took him out. Nobody else was injured.

How could that story have been so confused?

They went on national television and criticized the response, they declared themselves a seperate country. In BushWorld, it's "Yer either with us or agin us!" Vindictive, politcal bastards.

Anyway, that's my guess.

58. Yes, that's the way it looks. Maybe they want to be able DESTROY so much
in New Orleans that they can declare it unit for civilians. They were already trying to blackmail Gov. Blanco into turning New Orleans over to the feds. Hey if it's totally in their control and they cut all communication, seal the area "for safety," - they'd have a free hand to destroy or damage whatever they pleased. They could plant toxic wastes, fake reports of irreparable horrors, god knows what. Ultimately, they could say- OK, everybody keep out of New Orleans, it's not going to be rebuilt. Then turn it over for more oil refineries and shipyards. It's strategically located and would be very valuable as a corporate "park" without all those funny old buildings and smiling people around.

Hastert already said, quite early, that it "didn't make sense" to rebuild New Orleans. What if that's what they want and they're trying to set up the conditions where they could make it happen? If they had martial law and total control, they could do it.

:tinfoilhat: Just my tinfoilhatting here, but it's a possibility we need to be alert for, I think.

26. First cutting phone lines seems like treason during life and death ordeals
second as to why some conjecture.

If people can not communicate where they are they are more likely to die.
If they die they are no longer going to need a check from the government
if they were getting one before and certainly dead people do not need any money food or housing from anyone later.

As this took lomger and longer to get help to the stranded people it became a topic here at the moof hut as to how readily available the stats were on the amounts of Government Money folks left stranded in New Orleans represented. Afterall less for the poor means more for Halliburton.

Like a reverse line from the movie ten commandments,
the weak take little money from the rich
the dead take none.

congratulate the media on doing such a good job so far--then ask them to help save people in this parrish and perhaps elsewhere. They should DEMAND to know why FEMA is cutting phone lines--
and keeping out water trucks and other seemingly inexplicable actions.

59. I am worried that the feds want to tear down New Orleans and prevent the
people from rebuilding and repairing it. See what you think of this possibility. Wrote more about this speculation - and it is just speculation, but I think we need to be alert here - upthread here:

32. Just speculation, but did they think they were electrical lines?
Maybe they were idiots that couldn't tell the difference and thought there was an electrical hazard there. If so, perhaps it was more of a case of ineptitude than something serious. I'd like to not believe we have some serious criminal action going on behind the scenes, but then again, I'm not dismissing that possibility either!

40. This seems to be Bush Admin plan of control
They have denied the Red Cross from entering to help the people. They denied the buses from entering to evacuate the people.
They have systematically spread rumor of shooting of helicopters....Mass desertion of NO Police.
They claimed that the people were receiving food and water when it was very obvious they were not.

They refused assistance from other States, cities and towns with offers of police, fire, paramedic and equipment assistance.
They refused the support of physcians who offered their medical experience to take care of the sick and wounded.
They refused the offered support of airboat owners from Florida to help in the rescue and delivery of water and food.

They ignored the pleas for assistance from Gov Blanco, Sen Landrieu, and Mayor Nagin.

I think their plan was to wait until they could make things even worse and force the Gov to turn control of LA over to the Feds....meaning George W. Bush & thugs and he could declare Marshal Law.....thus he could hide their failures and corruption. They could lock out the media, they could control all the assistance funds and Halliburton would be in full control just as they are in Iraq.

46. An EXCELLENT summation, Goldie!
This would make an excellent letter to the editor or media-blast email, with a bit of editing...
The main thing I would add:

They didn't do a large-scale airdrop of food, water and basic medical supplies that would be the most BASIC first step in the book on how to handle a major flood emergency like this one.
I wonder what that book is... they HAVE to have a basic book on how to handle various sorts of emergencies, don't they? I wonder what FEMA's own printed first contingency plans are for such an emergency?

At any rate, kudos! Nicely written and brilliant in its simplicity!
d
ps: the nakedness of it as laid out this way makes it look like the plan of some James Bond villain... it's VERY, VERY difficult to look at this basic evidence and NOT conclude that this is a matter of MURDER on a massive scale, murder with malice aforethought... they didn't even just LET these people die. They PLANNED it, and they're STILL trying to carry it out, and to maximize the number of dead.
Perhaps 10,000 in NO alone, from what I heard on some news show tonight.
Saddam gassed his own people.
Bush let his drown.
And the numbers are going to be in the tens of thousands.

God, I'm still worried for Swamp Rat!... but knowing Broussard DID put armed guards on those lines is of some comfort...
I hope they keep 'em on...

56. Oh yes, you have it EXACTLY the way I see it too, very well organized
The timeline also stretches back to the gutting of FEMA and the refusal to allow the sinking, deteriorating levees to be maintained and built up - they slashed the funding and just didn't let the work get done on the levees. The Army Corps of Engineers begged for those funds, fought with the Adminstration for YEARS to no avail. (I got that story from my neighbor, who talked to one of those New Orleans Army Corps people.)

This thread which includes the longer timeline can be added in to extend the picture;

Thread title: FACTS: Bush was told about NO , he funded a study to confirm & then CUT $$

WE SHOULD PUT TOGETHER A SUMMARY THREAD BUILT FROM WHAT YOU WROTE. I have links for many of the statements. Let's add the documentation, polish and finish it, and media-blast that sucker!!!!

The telephone company is usually "in" and working to restore service asap. I know this situation is the worst so far, but these people are trained to go into hurricane damaged areas and FIX stuff.

44. I think that the main difference
Is the standing water, from what I've seen there is not going to be alot of activity from the telecommunications folks to restore phone lines in waist-deep or worse toxic water.

I don't know what to make about the report about FEMA cutting phone lines.

45. There's a reliable chain of information.
:eyes:

My brother just heard JP Sheriff Harry Lee say that his deputies

Are these underground wires or above ground wires?

If it's a downed utility pole, are all wires crossing or impeding any flow of vehicular traffic?

Do the deputies know the difference between electrical wires, cable, phone wires?

Given the recent spate of rumors and misinformation, it'll probably turn out to be kite string tangled up in the trees.

61. Ok this took me hours to reply, because I would've been banned
and still might get banned. This is not unknown person's brother. This is Swamp Rat's brother, A revered poster here. He lived in NOLA and evacuated to Mobile. His mother stayed behind and we finally heard (Friday, right guys?) that she had made it to Baton Rouge. They have local news access there, and are not sitting on the sidelines like us, reading, searching, etc. they are living Katrina. How dare you question his information.

63. I think people may have the wrong impression...
The way the Jefferson Parish president described it on MTP, it sounded like people from FEMA entered the Emergency Management building in Jefferson Parish and disconnected their telephone lines INSIDE the building.

When the sheriff saw this, he had the lines reconnected and an armed guard posted to prevent it happening again. He said this just before breaking down about the manager whose mother died on Friday after calling her son in that same building every day this week asking for help.

47. i don't know but president of jeff parish sez it's true
aaron broussard told the same story on national tv

i'm no fan of broussard but he wouldn't confabulate something like this

presumably fema was going to take the equipment elsewhere

they tried to do the same in slidell, mayor of slidell ben morris said if fema tried to take any more of their equipment, "they better bring weapons" because the town of slidell was hard hit and in desperate need of help and equipment

i assume fema was looting the equipment from the less televised areas to bring equipment into more heavily televised areas, such as orleans

seems to be all abt the teevee and not so much abt the ppl

67. It's ALWAYS image and not results with these goons of Bus$hitCo....
ALWAYS.

You can bank it when they say they are downing something for noble humanitarian reasons that it is pure horse crap and there is a hidden, evil agenda at work.

At this point, they do not not have any benefit of the doubt with me. They would have to prove they are acting in good faith. These reasons alone make it much more easy to believe the 9/11 and voting fraud conspiracies. Couple that with the tips of the iceberg showing such as the Downing Street Memo or Plame-Gate and well you would have to be a pollyanna and a fool to discount the other, much more insidious theories.

It may be to horrible to contemplate, but contemplate we must before this country is TOTALLY lost.

I feel sorry for the next Dem's that come into office. They will have a mountain of shit to clean up with a bunch of sheeple that will forget where it came from.

49. Why? For the same reason they confiscated cel phones and cut the
phone lines at hospitals in Faluja; for the same reason they confine Americans to "Free Speech Zones" far away from Bush publicity stunts: to control the flow of information. They want to control the flow of information so they can present the story they want the American public to see, without interference.

They have to cover up the planned genocides, everyone.

This is sick! :grr:

Letter here-mail that bastard president@whitehouse.gov

President Bush, you must resign now.

Your callous ineptitude in the face of a natural holocaust is inexscusable. You lied everyone into the war with Iraq, and not only that failed to help the minorities and people of New Orleans, Louisiana.

http://www.mediainfo.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp...

For this and the crimes of letting black and poor people die you should be incarcerated!

But rather than talk about that I and the rest of America will settle for your immediate and unconditional resignation. On top of failing the world, you have failed Americans. You have failed to follow the law of office, and your staged photo-ops with victims is unbelievable and insensitive.

RESIGN RIGHT NOW. DO NOT FORCE US TO IMPEACH YOU, OR THROW YOU IN THE HAGUE.
Do the right thing and resign. Almost everyone hates you now and your failed presidential cabinet, do the only choice.

79. SMOKING GUN: rescue troops, massive amnts of relief supplies were WAITING
for Bush's order. They followed the hurricane and stood by waiting while people were drowning for DAYS because the order did not come. Here is this devastating video and discussion on it. The most vital statements are near the end, when the NorthCom spokesman explains that they cannot go in without the President's order. The rest of the video shows how well-prepared and well-informed they were.

Here's the direct link to the BBC video in Windows Format:
http://www.nitrogen.no/files/video/bbc_interview.wmv
and in the original 28 mb MPEG-4:
http://news.globalfreepress.com/movs/katrina/BBC_Katrina.mpg
And here's the DU thread on it:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4605183
And a dKos thread on it:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/3/115611/4051

Meanwhile, Bush was relaxing. Then, many days after the hurricane, when basically there were STILL effectively no federal relief efforts, the Bush Administration tried to get Gov. Blanco to sign away important civil powers to them, including among other things, total control of New Orleans and of the state's National Guard - and THEN they would move in. Blanco refused, rightly seeing this as BLACKMAIL to force her to accept federal MARTIAL LAW:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1750979 (The LBN thread title - by DU rules the same as the WaPo title - is misleading. Read the excerpt.)

Federal relief efforts were minimal and people continued to die needlessly while the NorthCom commanders waited for Bush's order, but FEMA was out cutting emergency telephone lines in Jefferson Parrish. Civil police had to guard the repaired lines from FEMA!!!! There is NO GOOD REASON why FEMA would try to destroy emergency telephone commucations, but several sinister reasons, as have been discussed here. It would tighten the screws, keeping the area cut off so no reports could go either way.

I'm quite sure now that one of the things that this is about (I think there are several) is that the neocons want more power. They wouldn't call it martial law, though. It would be some Orwellian name like "Operation Safe America." They've been working toward this for years. John Dean calls it "constitutional dictatorship" and says it is possible (this was written in 2002 and discusses what would happen after another domestic terrorist attack - but the hurricane destruction does the trick even better):
http://archives.cnn.com/2002/LAW/06/columns/fl.dean.powers.0607

For what I think is an important part of the bigger picture in which all these horrors play a role, here is an article written in Dec 2003 in response to General Tommy Franks' amazing interview, the one in which he said that "one more hit" (like a domestic terrorist attack) would be enough for them to suspend the Constitution. This entire article is excellent and prescient, but I'm going to quote the paragraph that especially grabbed my attention.

http://www.sptimes.com/2003/12/07/Columns/From_Tommy_Franks__a_.shtml

82. MUST MUST MUST SEE VIDEO - Keith Olbermann BLASTS the bastards:
This made me cry because it was so moving to see the truth being told and the outraged, passionate integrity of Keith. This is going to open some eyes and it will comfort you to see the total absence of Bush-shielding spin at last I am hoping that the millions who saw it will remember Keith's forceful, passionate conviction as he says what the media SHOULD have been saying all along.

Keith's outrage is ours. The Administration is going to try to get him for this, or at least suppress him. Nothing like this has ever been seen on TV about Bush and Cheney, I'm sure of it. He is absolutely speaking from the heart and he knows the facts. Anyone who sees this will comprehend that. None of us needs to be convinced, but more of the American public does.

A video clip with Olbermann's piece, "The City Of Louisiana," has already been put up by a generous person and posted on the DU thread about this. A Windows Media version is up at Crooks & Liars, with a QuickTime version promised soon.

I've collected the links to this INCREDIBLE, THRILLING, TRUTH-TELLING REPORT from Keith here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4600287&mesg_id=4657376

A transcript should be posted tomorrow. I've also given a link to the DU thread about it. Of everything we've seen this is the most powerful by a major studio news anchor. It has everything, and it is absolutely DEVASTATING.

I hope Keith knows about FEMA cutting the emergency phone lines.
