And yes, he is small, but I've successfully raised much younger orphans.

6 years ago. The only problem is he wasn't weaned so he likes to suckle and knead a lot. He's the neediest cat I've ever owned!

I raised one as small as that too - and he too never got over the urge to suckle and nurse! There wasn't a nipple that was safe. He converted my nudist ex-husband into a shirt wearer, because you couldn't pick him up without him latching on!

And he grew into an enormous cat with a head the size of a grapefruit. The big sook.

brought him to me.
Beaker is neurotic, even for a cat, and also very, very needy.
He used to try to nurse from my two neutered males.
Needless to say, they appreciated it as much as your husband did!

the pets and the animals. I LOVE my golden retriever and two cats. I really don't think I could ever abandon them. I pray I'm never forced to make that heart-rending decision. I heard earlier that HSUS and ASPCA are finally cleared to go into NO to be able to rescue as many pets as they can. I routinely donate to the Humane Society. All animal lovers should, if they can, at this needy time.

I donated to three different animal groups for just that reason--they don't have voices of their own--we must supply them with a unified one.

Yes, I have been devastated by the human toll and plight. I am still sick over my missing son. But I'm glad to see that these uncomprehending creatures have made it.

I know there is going to be a lot of tragedy in days to come, and much sorrow. But I have been involved with the zoo in New Orleans in the past as a volunteer, and have wondered about those animals.

Thanks for this. I have to disconnect for a while, or I will go mad from sorrow, and I'm glad I saw this thread before I did.

So far no news. Unfortunately, at the best of times, he is difficult to locate. He is one of the disenfranchised, basically a street person in New Orleans. Long sad story.

There's really not much that anyone can do, but wait. I have been in contact with all the places I can find, and several DUers have been helping. Trying to find someone who has no fixed address, and who has severe mental illness and is resistant to treatment is going to be hard. Also, he's an insulin dependent diabetic, and would be in a very bad way if he'd lost his insulin.

There is someone I don't know also looking for him over at craigslist, and I've emailed them. Hope that I hear back.

I'm still sad for the otters, my favorite animals in the zoo :( But it could have been so much worse and I agree this is one of the few bits of good news regarding the animals of NOLA.

I dreaded a Miami Zoo Scenario after Andrew. This is good news.

I have a mustelid thing so I was sad about the otters but really you are right.

Hell I love all animals but otters are so damn smart and cute. I am so sad for them. :(

Of all the critters there, you would think that Otters would be better equipped to handle a mess like that, poor things :(

The little kitten is so cute. I hope he/she finds their owners if they have any. I couldn't imagine being torn away from a pet. :cry:

was killed by a hit and run driver. They were a week and a day old. We had to bottle feed them with KMR for about five weeks. The middle sibling died early, but the other two, the oldest, a male and the runt, a female, managed to survive. Kira, the little girl almost died of pneumonia when she was about 7 weeks old, but I got her to the vet in time and she survived. She never did grow very big. Her brother, Dax, was my protector for 10 years. I lost him cross country when I was moving from L.A. to Mass.--he got out of the van in Williams, AZ, and I never saw him again. :( Kira got to Mass with me, but she, too, decided the call of the wild was irresistible, and escaped from home in October of the same year. :( I never saw her again, and always wondered what happened to her.

They weren't really clingy, though--Kira loved sleeping on my shoulder, usually on top of my fleece robe, and Dax would lie by my head at night and be my protector.

I must say, those mules look like they were very well taken care of before the disaster.

I'm glad people aren't forgetting about the creatures who depend on us.

used to be in a very bad way - overworked, not given sufficient rest, water, etc, but in the 1980's laws were passed to protect them. They had to be treated well, well fed, given water breaks and rest breaks, and they had to have some kind of head protection in the hot months. So many of them have their own beflowered hats!

I remember how heartbreaking the mules were in the 1960's and 1970's - they were in bad shape, exhausted and obviously miserable. Also, the streets could get pretty bad, as they, naturally, crapped all over. Now they have little "catchers" for the dookey, and the mules look really great and seem quite happy and content. I'm glad they made it through, and are getting some clean water.

I have never been to NO. I had always planned to go. :(

Your experiences living there help me imagine what it was like.

God it is so overwhelming to me. I read they are not letting animal rescue teams in. I certainly hope and pray they get in there somehow anyway.

Rescuing kittens and feeding mules. They won't turn their backs on suffering dogs, either. We have to believe that and hope for the best until the animal rescue teams get in there. Dogs and cats are amazingly resilient.

:hug: Don't give up! :hug: We can all drop from emotional exhaustion after this is all over (whenever THAT will be), but, for now, hang in there!

We all have to keep faith for the babies in harms way. I do, I just get disgusted when I see them ignored.
