I've been glued to the TV for days watching this disaster unfold and the agony of those trapped in N.O. waiting for food, water, a ride out. After watching hours and hours of footage of the people who were left behind the one thing that impressed me more than anything else is how resilient and resourceful they were. I know there are reports of rapes and murders in the Superdome and Convention Center, but what I saw was many many acts of love, kindness, tenderness, of people banding together to help each other survive. Yes, many cried in frustration, but I never sensed they were scared, just exhausted.
While my heart was breaking every hour that went by and help didn't arrive, the only thing that kept me going was the courage, strength, and dignity that the vast majority of those who were trapped showed in this very frightening situation. I will never forget my anger at the way we let those people down, but I'll also never forget the strength and courage, the love and acts of kindness I saw from the victims.
