2. That does make sense.
Roberts was originally suppose to be the replacement for Rehnquist, he has a similar conservative philosophy and even clerked for Rehnquist, but then O'Connor went first. And I don't think either Scalia or Thomas seem like good picks for Chief Justice, Scalia is too disliked by colleagues, and with Thomas it'd be Deja Vu all over again. So it wouldn't surprise me.

That means that the second pick is really the replacement for O'Connor, not Roberts. Which means Democrats and moderate Republicans may have an angle to push for a more moderate pick, and for a woman - maybe Edith Clement? Its all up to moderate Republicans though, Democrats can't force the issue on their own - they're too outnumbered in the Senate.
